The UCA Conference on Teaching the Social Studies is intended for teachers (middle-level, secondary and college) to gain content knowledge that they can integrate in their courses. The one-day conference will allow teachers to learn from some world-famous scholars about Asian history, and will provide some choice of particular topics teachers may wish to pursue. We will seek approval from the Arkansas Department of Education for the event to provide professional hours for licensed teachers. Participants in the one-day conference may also wish to attend a public lecture by the keynote speaker at 7:30 p.m. on the evening before the conference begins.

  • Teaching Asian Religions
  • Asia and Western Colonialism
  • Teaching Chinese Civilization through Art and Literature
  • U.S.-Chinese Relations over two centuries
  • Shoguns and Samurai: Early Japan
  • Chinese Language and Writing (including pronunciation tutorial)

  • High School teachers
  • Middle School/Jr. High teachers of Social Studies
  • College faculty
  • Concurrent enrollment faculty
  • People interested in learning more about Asia

  • This symposium has been approved for professional development credit through the Arkansas Department of Education. Approval of this credit toward the 60 professional development hours required for teacher certification must be approved by the district superintendent or his or her designee.

Keynote Speaker:

Jonathan Spence is the Sterling Professor of History at Yale University and one of the world's leading authorities on the history of China since 1600. He is the author of many books, including The Death of Woman Wang, The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci The Question of Hu, The Gate of Heavenly Peace, and The Search for Modern China, which has become one of the most widely used texts on Chinese history in universities throughout the country. Dr. Spence has won received numerous prizes and awards in his career and has served as president of the American Historical Association.
