Pre - Medical Program

The Pre - medical Advisory Committee consists of:

Most medical schools require a minimum of three years (90 semester hours) of undergraduate college work, but almost all expect that students will complete a four-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree. Although many medical schools do not require specific courses or a specific major, most students who are successful in advancing into a college of medicine major in biology, chemistry, or general science.

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is required of applicants for admission to most colleges of medicine. Admission to medical school largely depends upon scores achieved on this test. Areas covered by the exam are verbal reasoning, writing, biological sciences, and physical sciences. Minimum requirements for admission to the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) are:

Biology 1440 - Principles of Biology I

Biology 1441 - Principles of Biology II

Biology 2490 - Genetics

Biology 3402 - Cell Biology

Chemistry 1450 - General Chemistry I

Chemistry 1451 - General Chemistry II

Chemistry 2401 Ð Organic Chemistry I

Chemistry 3411 Ð Organic Chemistry II

Physics 1410 Ð College Physics I

Physics 1420 Ð College Physics II

Mathematics: Two semesters (1390 and above)

English: Three semesters

Courses in the humanities are also required, but this requirement is satisfied by completion of the UCA general education program. UAMS suggests that the following courses, though not required, would be beneficial: Statistics, Computer Science, Calculus, Sociology, General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Speech.
