Dr. Morales's research focuses on the prehistoric rock art and the living indigenous arts of South America (Brazil, primarily). Additional research interests include the pre-Columbian art of the Caribbean, the prehistoric American Southwest, and contemporary art criticism and theory. He has presented his research and chaired sessions at several national and international conferences. His publications include "Considerations on the Art and Aesthetics of Rock Art," in Aesthetics and Rock Art, ed. Thomas Heyd and John Clegg (Aldershot, England: Ashgate, 2005); "The Angelim Style and Northeast Brazilian Rock Art," in Making Marks: Graduate Studies in Rock Art Research at the New Millennium, ed. Jennifer K. K. Huang and Elisabeth V. Culley (Tucson AZ: American Rock Art Research Association, 2005); and, with Melisa A. Quesenberry, "A Niche in Time: JD-5, Caribbean Cave Art, and the Fourth Dimension," American Indian Rock Art 31 (2005): 34-56. In 2003 he received the Castleton Award for excellence in rock art research, and in 2004 the Oliver Award for rock art photography, both from the American Rock Art Research Association.
