Return of the Yellow Peril:
A Survey of the Work of Roger Shimomura, 1969-2004
This national tour includes paintings and prints from four bodies of work by this Asian-American artist that explore family history, cultural and ethnic bias, and racial stereotyping. Known for his use of concentrated color, pop culture references, and interpretations of current events, Shimomura combines images from the Japanese printmaking tradition with Western-style comic book-type characters to create unique visual commentaries that cross time and generations. A Program of ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance with the Arkansas Arts Council and The National Endowment for the Arts.
Views From Both Sides of the Barbed Wire Fence
This exhibition combines prints and paintings by Roger Shimomura and John Newman to share diverse cultural perspectives based on family associations with Japanese-American internment camps that were operational during World War II. Shimomura spent two years as a toddler in Camp Minidoka in south-central Idaho with his family, and John Newman’s family observed Camp Rohwer as African American sharecroppers who lived in southern Arkansas. Curated in-house: Barbara Satterfield, Baum Gallery director.
Featured Artist Lecture: Roger Shimomura, University Distinguished Professor of Art Emeritus, The University of Kansas, Thurs. Jan. 17, 4-6pm, Art Lecture Hall, McCastlain Hall.

Inside/Outside: Student Drawings from the Rohwer Camp
This exhibition gives evidence of the youthful presence in the Rohwer internment camp and of the curriculum developed by its resident art educator, Mabel Rose Jamison, through drawings completed on site and preserved by McGehee resident and community leader Rosalie Gould. The drawings offer glimpse into student life and artistic response during an era of heightened political and cultural prejudice. Curated in-house: Dr. Gayle Seymour.
