Journalism Degree Requirements

UCA students earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Journalism. The following flexible program of study allows students to combine classroom knowledge with vital field training to prepare for careers in journalism. These degrees require completion of 124 hours including l) general education component, 2) specific degree requirements, 3) a major as described below, and 4) a minor as arranged through the student's minor advisor.

Journalism Emphasis - 43 Hours

Mass Communication - Core (6 Hours):
MCOM 1300 Media and Society
MCOM 1362 Mass Communication Practices and Processes
(1300 and 1362 may be taken concurrently.)

Journalism - Required (18 hours):
MCOM 2300 Beginning Reporting
(A grade of 'C' or higher in Writing 1310 and 1320 is required before enrolling in MCOM 2300.)
MCOM 2305 Basic Press Photography
MCOM 3300 Advanced Reporting (2300 is prereq.)
MCOM 3301 Media Law and Ethics
MCOM 3305 Publication Design and Makeup (2300 is prereq.)
MCOM 3308 News Editing (2300 is prereq.)

Journalism - Electives (12 hours) Choose from the following:
MCOM 2302 Media History
MCOM 2334 Non-Fiction Writing (2300 is prereq.)
MCOM 3307 Media Theory and Research (1300 is prereq.)
MCOM 3322 Directed Study in Communication
MCOM 3391/4391 Topics in Mass Communication (Consent of Instructor)
MCOM 4311 Writing for Electronic Media (Ask TV Faculty.)
MCOM 4323 Seminar in Mass Communication
MCOM 4331 In-Depth/Computer-Aided Reporting (3300 is prereq.)
MCOM 4332 Writing Editorials and Reviews (3300 is prereq.)
SPCH 3310 Writing for Public Relations (2300 is prereq.)
WRTG 3310 Technical Writing (Ask Writing Dept. Faculty.)

Application Courses (4 Hours): (All students are to complete 1 hour credit at each level. Each level may be repeated for a maximum 2 hours credit.)
