University of Central Arkansas
Department of Music
Music Scholarship Requirements
Undergraduate students attending college for the first time will be given preference in the awarding of music scholarships.
I Academic Eligibility
Continuing students must complete a minimum of 12 hours per semester with a GPA of 2.5.
Students needing less than 12 hours to graduate may enroll for only those hours needed in their final semester at the discretion of the scholarship committee and the approval of the department chair. The maximum award during this final semester would be the actual cost of tuition.
(effective July 1, 1991).II Music Eligibility
Awards are based on musical talent, academic preparation, financial need, student demographics, and faculty demographics (music major enrollment). Applicants must audition according to the policies and procedures established by the department.
No grade below "C" may be earned in a music course
Music scholarships will be renewed for ten semesters if all requirements are met. A student may appeal in writing to the Music Department Scholarship Committee for an extension of the award beyond the tenth semester.
III Ensemble and Accompanying Requirements
Normally, each undergraduate music scholarship student will audition for and participate in one appropriate large and one appropriate small ensemble, as recommended by the appropriate ensemble and applied faculty. In order to balance ensemble instrumentation and enrollment and in order to ensure a broadly based scholarship experience for students, the chair may assign students to an additional large ensemble or an additional small ensemble. This assignment will be made only after consultation with the appropriate ensemble and applied faculty. Conversely, after consultation with the appropriate ensemble and applied faculty, the chair may exempt a scholarship student from an ensemble requirement.
Pianists’ scholarship requirement is to provide three hours of accompanying service per week to the department in addition to any class related accompanying assignments.
The band, choir, orchestra, second ensemble, and accompanying requirements are waived for those students enrolled in the professional semester of teacher education.
All students are encouraged to take applied lessons except when prohibited by applied faculty teaching loads.
IV Re-applying for Lost Scholarships
Any student that fails to meet academic eligibility, music eligibility, and ensemble or accompanying requirements will lose their music scholarship.
The Music Scholarship Committee may provide opportunities for students who have lost their scholarship to re-apply. These opportunities to regain the music scholarship will be limited. Students should contact the Music Scholarship Committee Chair for specific dates and procedures relating to re-application.
