Denis W. Winter has been a member of the UCA music faculty since 1979 and immediately began an association with the ASO trombone section. In addition to playing in the ASO, Winter is trombonist with the Pinnacle Brass (Faculty Brass Quintet in Residence at UCA). In the fall of 2002, Pinnacle Brass presented 6 concerts and 2 masterclasses in Paris, and performed the American and European premieres of a new composition by Jean-Michel Damase, which was dedicated to them. They also have plans for a tour of Bolivia in the near future. In addition to trombone, he has a national reputation as a euphonium soloist, and his duties with the ASO include covering those parts as required, most recently in the Strauss, Ein Heldenleben; Moussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition; and Holst, The Planets.
Dr. Winter holds the B.M. from Ohio University, the M.M. from the New England Conservatory of Music, and he earned the first D.M.A. awarded from the University of North Texas for euphonium performance. He has been a member of Symphonia (a professional ensemble of euphonium and tuba players from across America) since 1995, and they have released 3 CDs, performed internationally in Italy and Canada, and have been featured at numerous festivals and conferences throughout the U.S., including the Brevard Music Center and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Dr. Winter has frequently been on the faculty of the Arkansas Governor’s School since it began in 1980, and also is on the faculty at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. He is a Professor of Music (trombone and euphonium) at UCA, and was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Band from 1975-79.
