How Are the Tutors Trained?

The Writing Center consultants go through a rigorous training and application process. First, a UCA professor must recommend a student to the Writing Center Director as being an outstanding writer. Next, those students recommended register for Writing 3315, Teaching and Tutoring Writing, where they study different written genres from across the disciplines, as well as techniques for teaching writing one-to-one. Students in the course also apprentice in the Writing Center that semester, observing writing conferences and then leading those conferences with the help of an experienced consultant. Finally, the students submit an application portfolio, assembled in the course, and hiring decisions are made at that time.
