Bob May

Bob May began his theatre career as an actor in 1967 doing a small role
in Kiss Me Kate at Ft. Lauderdale (FL) High School. Acting took a back
seat to directing while he earned a BA in theatre from St. Cloud (MN)
State University in 1972. Since that time he has directed over 350
productions at various educational, community, and professional
theatres across the country; winning numerous awards for his directing.
As he directed he was also writing plays. In the 1970’s his play
Magic Boots of Buffalo Leather won the Pillsbury-Waite playwriting
contest in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bob taught at Brainerd Community
College (MN) from 1985 through 1991 where his plays Paul Bunyan,
Lumberjack Extraordinaire, The Three Little Pigs, and Beanie and the
Bamboozling Book Machine, were produced. The later was published by
Samuel French, Inc. and has had hundreds of productions around the
world. In 1990, Mr. May was commissioned to write a play for an AIDS
seminar. The result was The Andrew is Dead Story, published by I. E.
Clark, Inc. In 1994 Bob earned an MFA in playwriting from the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas. During his tenure at UNLV the
university theatre produced eight of his plays, including Faces; For
the Love of a Woman; and The Clown, The Penguin, and The Princess and
his play A Different Kind of Nutcracker was produced by The Up North
Family Theatre in Brainerd, MN. His plays Broadway Memories and 9th
Inning Wedding are published in the text book, The Golden Stage by Ann
McDonough, Ph.D. 9th Inning Wedding is also published by I. E. Clark,
Inc. After graduation Bob moved to Arkansas to take an Assistant
Professor of Theatre position at the University of Arkansas at Little
Rock where he taught playwriting for for eight years before
transferring to the University of Central Arkansas to continue his
playwriting mentoring. Since moving to Arkansas Samuel French, Inc.
has published two sequels to his popular play Beanie and the
Bamboozling Book Machine. They are Beanie and the Bamboozling Horror
Machine and Beanie and the Bamboozling Adventure Machine. He has also
written all the plays that his Children’s Theatre to Go theatre company
has produced since its inception in 2002. They include Crystal and the
Christmas Snowman, Jack and the Beanstalk, and another sequel to his
Beanie series, Gidget’s Gadget to Bamboozle Beanie. He and his wife,
Cathy, live on Wye Mountain with two miniature donkeys, two mini
horses, four pygmy goats, nine cats, four dogs, and a cockatoo.
