How do I make an appointment for counseling?

You can either call the Counseling Center (501-450-3138) or come in person to the Counseling Center (Suite 327, Student Health Building). After you have completed our information forms you will be assigned to a counselor. The counselor will call you to schedule an appointment at a time/day that fits best with your schedule.

Are the services confidential?

Yes, what you share in private with a counselor is kept in strictest confidence. You are free, outside of counseling, to share whatever you want with whomever you want about your counseling. The Counseling Center will release information only with your written permission. There are a few exceptions: if you present a clear and present danger to self or others, you are engaged in or have knowledge about current child abuse or neglect, or are engaged in or have knowledge about current adult abuse or neglect.

What is the cost for counseling?

There is no charge or fee for counseling. The expenses associated with counseling are paid through your tuition and university funding.

Is there a limit on the number of counseling sessions?

Yes. A student may receive 10 sessions per year. For nearly all students that is a sufficient number to address their problems. Students who require more sessions will be given a list of referral options.

Does anyone in the Counseling Center prescribe medication?

We have a psychiatrist, affiliated with the Counseling Center, who is available by appointment four hours/week during the Fall and Spring semesters. The psychiatrist will see students only upon referral from a Counseling Center staff member. Therefore, a student who wants to see the psychiatrist must first schedule an appointment with a Counseling Center staff member.

The Counseling Center also makes some referrals to the Student Health Clinic, located in the same building as the Counseling Center. The Clinic is staffed by a physician and nurse practitioners who can prescribe antidepressant medications based upon their medical assessment of the individual student and in consultation with the Counseling Center.

Does the Counseling Center do any evaluation or testing for Attention Deficit Disorder or Learning Disabilities?

No. We keep a list of practitioners in our geographic area who provide such testing and make referrals to them for students who want to be evaluated for these conditions.
