Statement of Departmental Purpose

Mission Statement

The Art Department performs the customary function of advancing the cultural values of the university, and represents those qualities, customs and principles of education, scholarship and creativity which the university regards as desirable.

Goals

1. Students gain a thorough experience of the knowledge and practice of art, sufficient to demonstrate achievement in the skills and specific methods needed to sustain a growing, personal awareness of the processes, literature and ideas of art.

2. Knowledge and practice of art is evidenced by the state of cognizance or awareness of facts and circumstances of art, and by the application of those skills and specific methods needed to produce a consistently high quality result.

3. Teaching and learning is fostered as that relationship between two individuals in which one assists the other toward a new or different point of awareness, thus facilitating the fulfillment of personal need and the realization of human potential.

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Assimilation
     1a. To acquire a personal manner of working that is assimilated from the methods of one or more scholarly or artistic practices.
     1b. To be cognizant of the facts and circumstances of art.
     1c. To realize a personal understanding of art with a strong appreciation of how a personal idea is sustained against other individual and collective meanings with the implied significance of assessing the import of those ideas and meanings.
1. A written comprehensive examination is completed in response to questions submitted by the art faculty to test the assimilation of knowledge of the respondent. Answers are evaluated by a panel of faculty readers. Students will achieve a composite score of 85% on the Department of Art Assimilation Examination, with no subscore below 70%. The Assimilation Examination is scored in the following areas: (a) Assimilated knowledge of processes, (b) Assimilated knowledge of literature, (c) Assimilated knowledge of ideas, (d) Writing form.
2. Expression
     2a. To express the methods and processes of art.
     2b. To express awareness of the facts and circumstances of art.
     2c. To express personal, original thoughts.
2. A portfolio is maintained by the individual student, reviewed periodically by the student and faculty, and evaluated upon graduation by a panel of the faculty. Students will achieve a composite score of 85% on the Department of Art Expression Portfolio, with no subscore below 70%. The Expression Portfolio is evaluated in the following areas: (a) Expression of processes, (b) Expression of literature, (c) Expression of Ideas, (d) Organization and presentation of portfolio.
3. Critical Analysis
     3a. To evaluate on technical merit the quality of one or more artistic applications.
     3b. To question the history, language, and contemporary trends of one or more artistic applications.
     3c. To judge the comparative merits of two or more individual or collective meanings of art.
3. An interview takes place before a panel of the faculty in response to questions and comments from the panel. It provides a forum for verbal articulation of critical judgment. Students will achieve a composite score of 85% on the Department of Art Critical Analysis Interview, with no subscore below 70%. The Critical Analysis Interview is scored in the following areas: (a) Analysis of process, (b) Analysis of literature, (c) Analysis of ideas, (d) Speaking and verbal communication.
4. The BA Art (fine art) student will possess a developed visual sensitivity, the ability to conceptualize observations, and an understanding of the nature of contemporary thinking on art and design. 4. Senior Exhibit or Thesis. The exhibit or thesis is the culmination of a program of study and a confirmation of the learning experience. The exhibit or project is the responsibility of the student with the assistance of a faculty advisor. Evaluation is by a panel of faculty members, who score the exhibit or thesis in terms of ten indicators. The graduating student will score above 85% on the Department of Art Final Project Evaluation.
5. The student will be able to function in a variety of artistic roles, as detailed in NASAD instructional objectives. 5. Assessment Summary. The graduating student will achieve a composite score of 85% on the Department of Art Assessment Summary of the Knowledge and Practice of art. The Assessment Summary is composed of the assessment of Assimilation, Expression, Critical Analysis and Senior Project.

The exhibit or project is the responsibility of the student with the assistance of a faculty advisor.
