Statement of Departmental Purpose

Mission, College of Health & Applied Sciences

The mission of the College of Health and Applied Sciences is to improve the quality of life for all Arkansans. This is achieved through broad preparation of personnel and enhancement of research and service efforts in the health and technical fields. Specifically, the mission requires: (1) advocacy for equality of educational access and opportunity; (2) organization and support of outstanding undergraduate and graduate education programs; (3) preparation of professionals who embrace the highest standards of practice; (4) promotion and dissemination of research; (5) procurement of grant support to address state-wide needs; (6) organization and coordination of conferences and workshops; and (7) provision of consultative services. Educational programs are planned with an effective blend of liberal arts and professional courses to empower graduates for effective service as leaders in their professions and communities. The percept that each person served is unique and worthy of one's best efforts is central to all professional curricula.

Mission, Department of Health Sciences

The basic aims of the Department of Health Sciences are to (1) contribute to the general health promotion and education of all students and (2) provide advisement and counseling, comprehensive professional preparation, and foundation courses designed to prepare students for careers as health-care professionals, health educators, health promotion directors and coordinators in private or community settings.

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Baccalaureate graduates will demonstrate their knowledge and application of the seven competencies of a health educator as defined by the National Commission on Health Education.

1a. All students will complete an exit exam measuring knowledge and application of the seven competencies in their final semester of the program and 75% will score 70% or above on the exam.

1b. Ninety (90) percent of all the students will achieve a 2.75 GPA in their major prior to admission to the Internship in Health Education.

2. Baccalaureate graduates will be prepared to enter the work force in health education.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of the students will receive passing evaluations from the external internship supervisor on their rating of the competencies of a health educator utilized in their internship.

2b. At completion of the internship, 80% of the students will respond to the question "How well did your courses in health education prepare you for the job of a health educator?" with an average rating of 7.0 or more (on a scale of 10).

3. Baccalaureate graduates will be prepared to be successful applicants to a graduate program in health education.

3a. Sixty (60) percent of all graduates will hold a 3.0 GPA or above.

3b. Ninety (90) percent of students who apply to graduate school will be accepted.

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Graduates will demonstrate competency in professional examinations required for licensure in health education.

1a. Ninety (90) percent of graduates will pass the test of professional knowledge on the National Teachers Examination (NTE).

1b. Ninety (90) percent of graduates will pass the specialty area examination for health education on the NTE.

2. Graduates will demonstrate skills required of health education professionals in an educational setting.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of graduates will receive no less than a "B" on their evaluation by the health educator who supervises their student teaching experience.

2b. Graduates will develop a portfolio for the purpose of documenting the ability to plan lessons and develop educational materials.

3. Graduates will be successful applicants to a graduate program in health education. 3. Ninety (90) percent of graduates who apply to graduate school will be accepted.

MS in Health Education

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Graduates of the Master of Science program in Health Education will demonstrate competency in health education course work. 1. Ninety (90) percent of students who begin the graduate program in Health Education will meet candidacy requirements (3.0 GPA and no more than six semester hours of "C" grades) upon application to the program.
2. Graduates of the Master of Science program will demonstrate their knowledge and application of the seven competencies of a health educator.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of students who take the certification examination for credentialing as certified health education specialists will successfully achieve certification.

2b. Prior to graduation, 90% of the students will successfully complete oral and written comprehensive examinations in the department on their first attempt.

3. Graduates of the Master of Science program will be prepared for additional graduate work.

3a. Ninety (90) percent of the students who apply to graduate school will be accepted.

3b. Ninety (90) percent of students will successfully complete a research proposal prior to graduation.

BS in Health Sciences (Health Services Administration Emphasis)

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of basic science course work. 1. Ninety (90) percent of the students will successfully complete the biology, chemistry, and physics requirements for the course of study.
2. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of basic courses in the college of business. 2. Ninety percent (90) of the students will complete the 27 hours of required business courses with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
3. Undergraduate students will possess competencies needed to complete their internship experience in clinical settings. 3. Ninety-five (95) percent of the students will earn a grade of B or better in Health Sciences Internship (HSCI 4600).
4. Students will exhibit skills congruent with leadership and administrative skills in Health Services Administration.

4a. Ninety (90) percent of the students graduating will (1) secure employment in administrative roles in the delivery of health care services or (2) be admitted to a graduate program (MBA or MS in Hospital Administration).

4b. After one year of employment, graduates of the BS, Health Sciences, Health Services Administration Emphasis will respond to the question "How well were you prepared for your first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

4c. After one year of employment, the employers of graduates of the BS, Health Sciences, Health Services Administration Emphasis will respond to the question "How well was your employee prepared for his/her first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

BS in Health Sciences (Gerontology Emphasis)

1. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of basic science course work. 1. Ninety (90) percent of the students will successfully complete the biology, chemistry, and physics requirements for the course of study.
2. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of basic courses in sociology, psychology, and health sciences. 2. Ninety (90) percent of the students will complete the required courses in sociology, psychology, and health sciences with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
3. Undergraduate students will possess competencies needed to complete their internship experience in clinical settings. 3. Ninety-five (95) percent of the students will earn a grade of B or better in Health Sciences Internship (HSCI 4600). (The agency supervisor where the student completes the internship will help to evaluate the student.)
4. Students will exhibit skills needed to work in the field of gerontology.

4a. Ninety (90) percent of the students graduating will (1) secure employment in the field of gerontology or (2) be admitted to graduate school.

4b. After one year of employment, graduates of the BS program in Health Sciences with Gerontology Emphasis will respond to the question "How well were you prepared for your first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

4c. After one year of employment, the employers of the graduates of the BS program in Health Sciences with Gerontology Emphasis will respond to the question "How well was your employee prepared for his/her first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

BS in Medical Technology

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of basic science course work. 1. Ninety (90) percent of the students accepted into the medical technology professional program will successfully complete the biology and chemistry requirements for the preprofessional curriculum with a 2.5 GPA or higher for those courses.
2. Graduates from the baccalaureate program in medical technology will demonstrate understanding of medical technology course work.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of the graduates from the clinical program in medical technology at Baptist Health will successfully complete the professional curriculum in medical technology with a 2.5 GPA or higher for those courses.

2b. Eighty (80) percent of the graduates, upon completion of the professional curriculum in medical technology, will successfully complete and pass, on the first attempt, a national certification examination for medical technology.

3. Graduates from the baccalaureate pro gram in medical technology will be prepared for their first position in the field and quickly find employment in the field.

3a. Ninety (90) percent of the graduates of the medical technology program will have received a job offer within two months of their completion of the professional curriculum.

3b. After one year of employment, graduates of our medical technology program will respond to the question "How well were you prepared for your first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

3c. After one year of employment, the employers of the graduates of our medical technology program will respond to the question "How well was your employee prepared for his/her first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

BS in Radiography

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of the basic science course work prerequisites for the professional curriculum. 1. Ninety (90) percent of the students in the radiography degree program will successfully complete the required basic science course work with an overall GPA of 2.5 or better.
2. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of radiography professional course work.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of the students accepted into the professional programs for the radiography degree will successfully complete the professional curriculum with a 2.5 GPA or higher for those courses.

2b. Eighty (80) percent of the students, upon completion of the professional curriculum in radiography, will successfully complete and pass, on the first attempt, the certification examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

3. Students completing the baccalaureate program in radiography will be prepared for their first position in the field and quickly find employment in the field.

3a. Ninety (90) percent of the graduates in radiography will have received a job offer within two months of their completion of the professional curriculum.

3b. After one year of employment, graduates of the radiography degree program will respond to the question "How well were you prepared for your first position of employment?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

3c. After one year of employment, the employers of the graduates of the radiography program will respond to the question "How well was your employee prepared for his/her first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

BS in Nuclear Medicine Technology

Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of the required science course work. 1. Ninety (90) percent of the students in the Nuclear Medicine Technology degree program will successfully complete the required science course work with an overall GPA of 2.5 or better.
2. Undergraduate students will demonstrate understanding of nuclear medicine technology professional course work.

2a. Ninety (90) percent of the students accepted into the clinical program at Baptist Health will successfully complete the professional curriculum with a 2.5 GPA or higher for those courses.

2b. Ninety (90) percent of the students completing the program will pass the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certifying Board Exam (NMTCB) and the nuclear medicine portion of the American Association for Radiologic Technologist Board Exam (AART).

3. Students completing the baccalaureate program in nuclear medicine technology will be prepared for their first position in the field and quickly find employment in the field.

3a. Ninety (90) percent of the graduates in nuclear medicine technology will have received a job offer within two months of their completion of the professional curriculum.

3b. After one year of employment, graduates of the nuclear medicine technology degree program will respond to the question "How well were you prepared for your first position of employment?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.

3c. After one year of employment the employers of the graduates of the nuclear medicine technology program will respond to the question "How well was your employee prepared for his/her first position?" with an average rating of 7.5 or more on a scale of 10.
