Intended Outcomes/Objectives Assessment Procedures and Criteria
1. Graduates will possess a broad and deep knowledge and understanding of undergraduate-level physics as that is generally conceived in the physics profession.

1a. The average percentile position of students who take Graduate Record Exams, with respect to undergraduates in similar programs, should be at least 50th percentile.

1b. The Department faculty will consider each year's graduates in an overall evaluation, including factors such as lab work, presentations, and research projects, in order to identify areas of proficiency and of deficiency in knowledge and understanding, according to the generally accepted standards of the profession. At least 50% of the graduates should be considered proficient in all relevant areas.

2. Graduates will demonstrate competence in the application of the concepts and principles of physics and the analytic cognitive skills required for physics. 2. The Department faculty will consider each year's graduates' performance in the Senior Seminar and the Advanced Lab and will make an evaluation, in order to identify areas of competence and of incompetence in the application of the concepts and principles of physics and the analytic cognitive skills required for physics, according to the generally accepted standards of the profession. At least 50% of the graduates should be considered competent in all relevant areas.
3. Graduates will be well-prepared for graduate studies or for the work force. 3. The Department will survey its graduates two to four years after graduation. At least 75% of the graduates should feel that they were generally well prepared for graduate school or for the work force.
Departmental Honors Program
1. Graduates with departmental honors will demonstrate the ability to carry out a research program. 1. The Department faculty will consider the performance of the honors graduates in their research projects, according to the generally accepted standards of the profession. At least 50% of the honors graduates should be considered excellent.
2. Graduates with departmental honors will demonstrate the ability to present the outcomes of a research program in writing and orally. 2. The Department faculty will consider the written and oral presentations of the honors graduates, according to the generally accepted standards of the profession.
