DIETETIC INTERNSHIP   

DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES

         Accredited by the Commission of Accreditation by the American Dietetic Association, the program meets competencies for eligibility to write the   ADA Registration Exam to become a Registered Dietitian (RD).

         Students are required to complete 1000 clock hours of supervised practice.  This is accomplished by completion of the four practicums during summers I and II, and three additional weeks of practice between the two summers.  During two weeks of this practice, students are required to complete 25 nutritional assessments under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian.  During the time between, students are required to complete an individually designed, unique, research project that includes data collection and analysis.

         

        The mission of the dietetic internship is to provide a supervised practice component in dietetics which culminates in registration eligibility with the American Dietetic Association.  Students will be provided opportunities to develop expertise in the nutrition therapy, community, foodservice systems management and business/ entrepreneur competencies as set by ADA.

        Practice sites include but are not limited to the following facilities:

 

         Sequenced objectives, activities and evaluation strategies are planned to meet ADA competencies.

        Supervision and evaluation is provided by dietetic faculty at UCA and adjunct faculty in healthcare facilities.

  1. Baccalaureate Degree

  2. Verification Statement from an approved Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) certifying completion of ADA requirements.

  3. Official transcript(s) of course work from all colleges and universities attended.

  4. Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

  5. Work experience in dietetics-related area.

  6. Business letter of application stating career goals.

  7. Completed Dietetic Internship application including letter of application and three letters of recommendation postmarked by the February deadline.

  8. Participation in the computer-matching program sponsored by the American Dietetic Association.

  9. Enrollment in Graduate School is requiredEach student enrolls in 24 graduate hours, 12 hours the first Summer; 3 hours each Fall and Spring between the two Summers; and 6 hours the second Summer.

 

        The most current program costs will be included with the application packet.

All applicants to Dietetic Internships (DI) and Preprofessional Practice programs (AP4) must participate in computer matching.  Applicants should request this material from any ADA-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics or from D & D Digital Systems.  This request should be made to allow turnaround time for meeting the February 15, 2006  postmark deadline.  There is no charge for this material.  However, there is a charge for computer matching that is due with the applicant's prioritized ranking.
