The Charlie May Simon Children's Book Award, established in 1970, honors one outstanding piece of children's literature each year. Sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Education in conjunction with the Arkansas Elementary School Council, the award serves the dual purpose of recognizing an outstanding work for children and of promoting reading in Arkansas. Each year one book chosen by students in grades four through six in a reading and voting process.
