Leadership Studies

Courses to begin Fall 2008.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies is designed to prepare scholar leaders for academic positions and for leadership roles in complex organizations found in education, healthcare, government, and non-profit settings. These scholar leaders will understand their roles in conserving, expanding, and transforming the discipline of leadership studies and their responsibilities for informing the world of practice.

Program Outcomes

Through an interdisciplinary approach to leadership studies, graduates will

  1. design sound research using appropriate methodology, conduct scholarly research that contributes to the body of knowledge in the discipline of leadership studies, and apply research results from related fields to the discipline of leadership studies.
  2. understand the complexities associated with leadership, the conditions under which it occurs, and the traditional approaches to the examination of leadership ranging from state and trait theories, to functional, transformational, and servant leadership concepts.
  3. analyze concepts, theories, and practices required by leaders in the 21st century global environment to advance organizational success and foster organizational growth.
  4. collect and analyze information from internal and external sources to evaluate organizational effectiveness and both recommend and employ leadership strategies to promote organizational change.
  5. adhere to ethical standards in the scholarship and practice of leadership that foster collaboration, higher levels of organizational performance, and mentorship.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Ph.D. in Leadership Studies is a competitive process based on the following criteria:

  1. Graduate GPA
  2. GRE Scores
  3. Experience in the field (Preferred 3 Years)
  4. Articulation of Aspirations
  5. Professional/Academic Persona

The following documents should be submitted to the Director of Doctoral Studies for application consideration:

  1. Ph.D. Leadership Studies Application
  2. Current CV or resume
  3. 3-4 Page Statement of Purpose (Identify your long and short term professional vision and how the Ph.D. will influence the fulfillment of that vision. Additionally, describe what aspects of doctoral study are most exciting to you, and the significance or impact of formal study during your Master's program and beyond.)
  4. 3 Letters of Recommendation/Personal Reference Forms
  5. Top candidates in a given pool will be invited on campus for an interview with program faculty

To be considered for candidacy, applicants must also apply to the UCA Graduate School. With this application, potential students should submit official GRE scores (no older than 5 years) and official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended. NOTE:  The Graduate School application does not replace the application form for the Leadership Studies program. It is possible to be admitted to the UCA Graduate School and not be admitted to the Leadership Studies program.

I. Leadership Studies Required Core (21 Semester Hours)

The core is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of contemporary organizations and the wide range of influences on 21st century leadership.
