Admission Level I

Candidates seeking admission into Level I of the teacher education program will initiate the process for admission in the Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience upon completion of minimum requirements mandated by the Arkansas Department of Education and the University of Central Arkansas.  

       Candidates who are applying for admission and are currently enrolled in pre-requisite courses must successfully complete the courses before full admission is granted. Interviews for admission into Level I will occur one time during the fall semester and one time during the spring semester. Summer interviews may be conducted at the discretion of the academic departments. Academic departments may also conduct additional interviews during any semester if deemed necessary. Interview dates may not be scheduled prior to the mid-term of any semester.

      Candidates are responsible for establishing a candidate account on the College of Education database.  Candidates may open the account in the Technology Learning Center (Mashburn 102) or via the web at the College of Education web page (Candidate Account Manager).  The Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience will not create an admission file for any candidate who has not established the candidate account.  Candidates will initiate the application for admission by submitting the Admission Affidavit to the Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience.  The Admission Affidavit will be submitted during the semester the candidate is seeking admission.  The Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience will maintain an active file on each candidate initiating the process of admission.  The Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience will place assessment data on each candidate into the College of Education candidate database.  The Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience will serve as the location for candidates to register for the admission interview.  Academic departments may access the interview rubrics on the PEU Pool drive.  Completed rubrics, with the academic department recommendation for admission (or to deny admission), must be forwarded to the Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience.  Candidates will complete the following for admission into the teacher education program.

  1. The establishment of an account on the College of Education candidate database. 
  2. Submission of an Admission Affidavit stating that the candidate has never been convicted of any crime that would prevent the issuance of a teaching license (Act 1313 of 1997 and Act 752 of 2001). This form must be submitted in person to the Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience, Mashburn 230 during the semester the candidate is seeking admission into the teacher education program. 
  3. A cumulative 2.5 GPA on all coursework attempted. Prior to admission, transfer students with no previous coursework at UCA must also establish a 2.5 GPA in a minimum of twelve semester hours completed at UCA.
  4. Completion of courses in written communications (WRTG 1310 and 1320), oral communications (SPCH 1300), and mathematics (MATH 1360 or above) with no grade less than a C. Some majors require College Algebra (MATH 1390) for admission. The following pre-admission education courses must be completed with no grade less than a C: EDUC 1300 Education as a Profession and and successful completion of the Educational Technology Ceompetency Exam or EDUC 1240 Basic Educational Technology Skills. Majors in P-4 education must also complete ECSE 3300 Foundations of ECE. 
  5. Completion of the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) according to current UCA established minimum scores:  PPST Reading 172; PPST Math 171; PPST Writing 174 (effective 10-21-02).  Candidates are advised to take the Praxis I during the freshman year.  Admission to the program will be delayed until minimum scores on each section are achieved. 
  6. Completion of forty-five semester hours.
  7. Submission of two recommendations for admission from UCA faculty (one recommendation must be completed by the instructor of EDUC 1300 or ECSE 3300).
  8. Successful candidate interview and recommendation for admission by the major area faculty.  Candidates will register for the interview in the Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience.  Items A-G will be forwarded to the candidate's major academic department prior to the interview dates established by the department.  Interview registration deadlines are listed below.
    • October 1 - Final date for the admission interview registration (H) for candidates seeking admission for the spring semester.
    • November 1 - Final date for completion of items A-G for candidates seeking full admission for the spring semester.
    • March 1 - Final date for the admission interview registration (H) for candidates seeking full admission for the summer or fall semester.
    • April 1 - Final date for completion of items A-G for those candidates seeking full admission for the summer or fall semester.
    • **July 1 - Final date for the admission interview registration (H) for candidates seeking admission for the fall semester.
    • **August 1 - Final date for completion of items A-G for those candidates seeking full admission for the fall semester.

    The Office of Candidate Services and Field Experience will observe the above deadlines for the application process. Candidates are encouraged to submit all documentation for admision prior to the established deadlines.

**Summer interviews are offered at the discretion of the academic department.

Effective April 2003, candidates may not pre-register for upper level professional education courses unless all requirements listed above are complete prior to the time of pre-registration.

Effective September 1, 2003, candidates admitted for admission to the teacher education program will be assessed a fee of $250 to cover costs incurred in early field placements and Internships I and II. This fee will be due at the beginning of the semester (January or August) following full admission to the teacher education program.

Academic Departments may have additional requirements that must be met prior to candidates receiving a recommendation for admission. Candidates for admission are advised to contact the program coordinator in their major academic department for any additional requirements.

During Level I of the teacher education program, the candidate will be responsible for the development of artifacts that demonstrate competency in the established performance criteria. Faculty will assess candidates for the knowledge, application, or integration of specific performance criteria during the candidates' enrollment in their classes. Expectations and assessments of candidates will be based upon demonstrated best practices. The assessments used throughout the program (TPOA-Teacher Performance Outcomes Assessment) will be closely aligned with the Pathwise and Praxis III domains and criteria, which are already correlated to the Principles for Licensure of Beginning Teachers. Based upon these assessments, mentors will provide consistent feedback to candidates and determine the candidate's preparation for entrance into the Internship phase of the teacher education program.
