Appraisal is published quarterly and reviews science specific materials including individual books, series, science activities and experiments, reference books, photographic essays, picture books, science biographies and educational software. Two independent reviewers - a librarian and a specialist, examine each item.  A special rating system is used for each review.  Formats of materials include books, activities, and software.

Booklist Web Site
is a companion to the print version of Booklist.  It provides a database of indexed full text reviews in the form of a list of best-of-the-year selections from 1995-2001.  Included in the reviews are books in fiction, nonfiction, and reference.  Selections include age recommendations.  The site offers a search engine as well as an ongoing cumulative index to the print version.


NCSS: Notable Social Studies Books for Young People

The National Council for the Social Studies provides an annual list of notable social studies books primarily for students in grades k-8.  Books are evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee that was appointed by the NCSS in cooperation with the Children's Book Council.   The lists are available from 1998 –2001 and are arranged by broad subject categories and sub-themes according to the Strands of the Social Studies Standards.  Review criteria are noted as well as identification of committee members. A special feature of the site is the hyperlinked ISBN that allows you to purchase the book from Amazon.com.
 


NCTE Journals Online

Six journals are available for teachers of grades K-12: Language Arts, School Talk, Primary Voices K-6, Voices from the Middle, English Journal, and Classroom Notes Plus.  Journals include teaching ideas and current issues in Language Arts as well as reviews of children’s books and professional materials.

School Library Journal is known for its many reviews in multiple formats – books, software, videos, CD ROM, DVD, and websites.  A newly designed website has surfaced recently which promises a link to a database of reviews.  Currently accessible is a list of bestsellers and School Library Journal’s best books of the year.
 


Smithsonian’s Notable Books for Children

 Archives available from 1993-2001 for young (ages 1-6), middle (ages 6-10), and older readers (ages 10 and up).  Primarily review fiction titles; however nonfiction selections are listed.  There is no designation for nonfiction titles.  A special feature is a link to Barnes and Noble.com for purchasing.  This site reviews only books.
