English Department

Byron Chaucer Dryden

The UCA Department of English is proud to offer a rich program
of study for undergraduates. Indeed, in a recent review by
out-of-state consultants, the department was rated “excellent”—
one of only two English programs in the state to have achieved
such a rating. Program reviewers were particularly impressed
by the professional credentials of the English faculty, by the
sound and varied curriculum offered, and by our facilities
(our classroom space and library).

The English faculty are proud of their commitment to undergraduate
teaching, a commitment underscored by the presence among
them of four winners of the University’s Teaching Excellence
Award—no other department on campus has as many currently
in the classroom.

The Department of English at UCA offers both the Bachelor of
Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.)
degrees. On the graduate level, we offer a traditional M.A. as well
as a 15-hour Diverse Literatures Certificate for teachers. Students
with the B.A. generally go on to graduate school in English or to
Law School, or they enter government service or move to a position
in business communication, journalism, or to an entry-level management
position in business and industry. The B.S.E. student graduates
with an Arkansas State Teacher’s Certificate and customarily will
enter the field of secondary education.
