GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

January 24, 2002


The Graduate Council met in regular session on January 24, 2002, in the Torreyson Library Conference Room. Members present: Joe Arn, Keith Atkinson, Cathy Caldwell, Linda Griffith, Paul Hamilton, Jane Lammers, Katherine Larson, Venita Lovelace-Chandler, Bonnie Melchior, John Murphy, Armand Picou, Ira Saltz, Jeff Showell, Glenda Thurman, Nicole Hare, and Sarah Charton. Members absent: Ronn Hy, Don Jones, Margaret Morgan, Sheila Stroman, and Tanner Chapman. Dr. Gabriel Esteban and Dr. Ronald Fritze were in attendance to answer questions concerning the program and course proposals in Accounting and History.

I. Approval of Graduate Council Minutes from November 15, 2001:

Unanimously approved.

II. Subcommittee I recommended approval on the following Graduate Faculty Application:

Gordy, Sondra HIST 3 year (2005) HIST 5355, 5391, 5346, 6303, 6397

Unanimously approved.

III. Subcommittee II recommended approval of the New Program and New Course proposals for the following:

Master of Accountancy (MAcc)

ACCT 6317 Seminar in Auditing

ACCT 6320 Seminar in Accounting Information Systems

ACCT 6350 Seminar in Accounting Leadership

ACCT 6340 Seminar in Case Studies in Accounting

ACCT 6319 Corporation and Shareholder Taxation

ACCT 6329 Partnership and S-Corporation Taxation

ACCT 6339 Estate and Gift Taxation

ACCT 5316 Advanced Income Tax

ACCT 5312 Advanced Accounting



Discussion focused on the need for oral or written comprehensive exams or for a capstone course. The assessment plan was discussed and whether a list of the students taking the CPA exam could be obtained. Dr. Atkinson reported that Accounting Department faculty had discussed the comprehensive exam and determined that it was not necessary for this program. There is no mechanism at this time to obtain scores from graduates on the CPA exam. It was recommended that the Seminar in Case Studies course might serve as an integration or capstone experience. At the end of each student's program, an exit interview was suggested.

Recommendation to approve the program and new courses was unanimous.

IV. Subcommittee III recommended approval of the following new courses:

BIOL 5250 Scanning Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis


Vote was unanimous pending additions and corrections which are forthcoming.

HIST 6350 African and Islamic History

HIST 5318 Archaeology and History of Southwest Native American Civilizations

Vote was unanimous following cover sheet corrections on 5318 recommended by the subcommittee.

MATH 5335 Geometry, Measurement and their Applications

Vote was unanimous pending receipt of new cover sheet and Professional Education Council approval.

SPAN 5340 History of the Spanish Language

Unanimously approved with the addition of "Permission of Instructor" to the cover sheet.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m. The next scheduled meeting will be February 21, X-period in BBA 220.
