GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

  July 17, 2003

 

The Graduate Council met in regular session on July 17, 2003 in BBA 220 with a quorum present including: Joe Arn, Keith Atkinson, Steve Butcher, Paul Hamilton, Don Jones, David Kim, Jackie Lamar, Jeff Showell, Stephanie Vanderslice and Elaine McNiece.   Voting by proxy: Emogen Fox, Bonnie Melchoir, John Murphy, and Glenda Thurman.  Guests in attendance to answer questions concerning their agenda items were: Dr. Pat Cantrell, Interim Dean, College of Business, Dr. Terry Kearns, Department of English, Dr. Rita Zabel, Department of Physical Therapy, and Dr. Terry James, Associate Dean, Graduate School.

After discussion on the criteria for the 3 year membership, Subcommittee I recommended approval with review in 2006.  Motion passed unanimously.

After discussion on the criteria for the 8 year membership, Subcommittee I recommended approval with review in 2011.  Motion passed unanimously.

 

III.     New Program Proposal/New Course Proposals/Curriculum Change

 

A. Change in admission requirements for MA in English:


 

In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to graduate school, the student must present satisfactory scores on the General Section of the graduate Record Examination (GRE).  Further, the student must have earned a minimum 3.00 GPA in an undergraduate major or minor in English literature to gain regular admission to the program.  Finally, a student must show the equivalent of one year of undergraduate foreign language study, or must remedy this deficiency before the MA Comprehensive Examination is taken.

 

For conditional admission to the program, consult the department chair or graduate coordinator.

 

Subcommittee II recommended approval, vote was unanimous.

 

B.            Changes in graduate programs in the Department of Physical Therapy:

 

Recommendation to reduce the requirements for the existing Master of Science degree from 36 to 30 credits.

 

Elimination of PTHY 6314 (DPT only) as a required course, but continue to allow it as an elective in the transitional track of the DPT program.

 

Expand the credit hours in PTHY 7120, Professional Self Assessment, to become 7317, a three credit course.

 

Subcommittee II recommended approval, vote was unanimous..
