GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

       March 21, 2002

 

 

The Graduate Council met in regular session on March 21, 2002, in BBA room 220 and the Nursing Conference Room, DHSC. Members present: Joe Arn, Keith Atkinson, Sarah Charton, Paul Hamilton, Ronn Hy, Jane Lammers, Katherine Larson, Venita Lovelace-Chandler, Elaine McNiece, Chair, Bonnie Melchior, John Murphy, Armand Picou, Ira Saltz, Jeff Showell, and Glenda Thurman. Members absent: Cathy Caldwell, Linda Griffith, Nicole Hare, Don Jones, Margaret Morgan, Sheila Stroman, and Tanner Chapman. Also attending were Susan Moss-Logan and Art Gillaspy.

 

1.                  Graduate Council Minutes of February 21, 2002 were approved as distributed.

 

II.            McNiece reported the following actions from the Council of Deans meeting of March 13, 2002 relative to the February 21 minutes:

 

ENGL            5360            History and Structure of the English Language             [tabled]

 

Concern was expressed about the proliferation of 5000-level courses and a reduction in 6000-level requirements. The course was tabled until external consultants conclude their review of the English program.

 

The Council of Deans did not accept the following courses as reinstatements:

 

HIST               5367            Tudor-Stuart England 1485-1714

HIST               5369            Victorian England 1815-1901

 

Dr. Fritze has been requested to resubmit the course syllabi as new course proposals.

 

III.            Subcommittee I recommended approval of the following New Program and Course Proposals with modifications:

Vote to approve was unanimous.

 

IV.            Subcommittee I also recommended that the Graduate Council study the duplication of courses and course offerings for graduate statistics, research, grantwriting and pedagogy courses. Recommendation accepted for the 2002-2003 academic year.

 

V.            Subcommittee II recommended approval of the following New Program and Course Proposals and Proposal for Curriculum Change with modifications:

 

Master of Science in Leadership and Information Technology including the following new courses:

VI.            Subcommittee II recommended the following Curriculum Change:

 

Community Counseling Program (Increasing current 48 hours to proposed 60 hours)

 

Courses previously approved which can be selected by the student in consultation with their advisor as electives to fulfill the additional 12 semester hours necessary for licensure as a Counselor in the State of Arkansas.

IX.       The following recommendations for changes in the Graduate Bulletin were made:

 

1.                  Add to the graduate bulletin page 19

 

GRADUATE COUNCIL POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE

When warranted by special circumstances, a graduate student is entitled to petition the Graduate Council Policy Subcommittee for relief of an unfair hardship brought about by academic regulations. The petition form, obtainable from the Dean of the Graduate School, should be completed with the assistance of the student=s advisor.  Completed requests containing all necessary signatures, should be submitted to the Graduate Dean.

 

2.                  Move Section on appeal Procedures from page 17 to page 19.

 

            Dr. Lovelace-Chandler moved to approve, seconded by Dr. Lammers.

 

Motion passed unanimously.

 

X.             Subcommittee III recommended the following:

 

All graduate programs must require presentation of standardized admission test scores (GRE or GMAT) no later than the end of the first semester of graduate course work.

 

Motion passed unanimously.

 

XI.            ANNOUNCEMENT:

 

Because of a conflict with the faculty/staff awards reception, the Graduate Council meeting originally scheduled for April 18 has been canceled. The final meeting of the academic year will be THURSDAY, MAY 9, X-PERIOD IN BBA 220. (One week earlier than previously announced.) All items for the agenda must be received by the Graduate Office by April 15.
