GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

The Graduate Council met in regular session May 9, 2002 in BBA 220.  Members present were: J. Arn, P. Hamilton, R. Hy, K. Larson, V. Lovelace-Chandler, B. Melchior, M. Morgan, A. Picou, I. Saltz, J. 1.                  Graduate Council Minutes from March 21, 2002, were approved as distributed.

 

II.            Physical Therapy Staffing Plan

 

Subcommittee I recommended approval of the Staffing Plan submitted by the Physical Therapy Department.

 

Motion passed unanimously.

V.        GRE Policy

 

The Council discussed revisions to the Graduate Bulletin related to Graduate School policies for the GRE. The Council recommended sending a follow-up letter to deans, department chairs, and graduate coordinators indicating a proposed implementation date for students entering in fall 2003 with request for feedback.

5.                  Guidelines for MSE in Reading to appear in Graduate Bulletin

 

1.            In addition to the general application and GPA requirements of the UCA Graduate School, applicants must:

 

2            Submit valid general education teaching license.

3.                  Submit two letters of reference from practicing professionals who can speak to the candidate=s knowledge, performance, dispositions, and capability to complete a master=s program.

4.                  Submit appropriate scores on the Graduate Record Examination.

5.                  No more than three hours may be transferred from another institution of higher education. These three hours will be an elective and will not be considered as a substitution of core requirements.

6.                  Program of study must be filed prior to enrollment in the 12th hour.

7.                  Research Methods must be taken before the 12th hour.

8.                  Application for participation in the Comprehensive Examination can only be filed after the completion of the 24th hour.

9.                  Participation in the Comprehensive Examination can only take place during the final semester of study.


10.              Students who fail the Reading comprehensive Examination on the initial attempt may, after one semester has elapsed, apply for re-examination. This second attempt shall be the final opportunity to participate in the Reading Comprehensive Examination.  Should the student fail the second attempt, the degree will not be awarded.

11.              Students who fail to apply after two years have elapsed since initial unsuccessful attempt on the reading comprehensive Examination shall be denied application and the degree will not be awarded.

VII.            Announcements

 

1.                  McNiece reported on action of the Council of Deans concerning the March Graduate Council Minutes.

 

2.                  The Robert McLauchlin Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Christina Barrett. She is pursuing a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) degree. The award will be presented to her at the September Graduate Council meeting.

 

3.                  There will be one summer meeting of the Graduate Council.
