Department of Health Sciences

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH SCIENCES

Objectives: 

The Master of Science in Health Sciences is designed to prepare individuals who are currently employed   in a health field for upward mobility.  This degree prepares students to give communities leadership in assessing   needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating health programs.  The graduate is also better prepared to assume supervisory roles within   the health care industry.

 

Degree Program   Admission Requirements:

For admission to graduate study for the Master of Science degree in Health Sciences, students must meet the general requirements for admission to graduate study, including submission of GRE scores to the graduate office.  A potential candidate for this degree program should contact Dr. Emogene Fox, Chair of the Department of Health Sciences.

Petition for Candidacy:

A student must be formally accepted as a candidate before the eighteenth hour of graduate work.  Criteria for applying or candidacy in the department include (1) completing nine hours of course work with a 3.00 GPA or above and (2) completing all conditions for admission to the department. 

Additionally, the student must complete all course work with at least a 3.00 GPA or above and no more than six semester hours of C grades.  Students receiving   more than two Cs in graduate courses will be dismissed from the graduate program in Health Sciences.     

Degree Requirements:

The Health Sciences core requirements (18 hours):  HSC 5331, HSC 5370, HSC 6321, HSC 6361, HSC 6379, MSIT 6382 or KPED 6316. The Thesis Option is thirty-three hours and includes a thesis.   The Non-Thesis Option is thirty-six hours.

Electives hours (18) are to be selected with the approval of the graduate advisor.  They include nine (9) to twelve (12) hours of electives within the department and six (6) to nine (9) hours in courses from departments outside of the department of Health Sciences. 

Comprehensive   Examination:

All students must pass comprehensive examinations.  The comprehensive examination will be administered during the fall and spring semesters.  It is the responsibility   of the student to advise the graduate advisor of the intent to take the comprehensive examinations if the student is within six hours of the completion of the degree program.
