Participation Standards for CLA & Departmental Tenure and Promotion Committees
approved by CLA Tenure & Promotion Committee, November 2006
I. Because the decisions made by the departmental tenure and promotion committees are of the utmost importance, it is expected that faculty members who serve on the committee commit to engage fully in the process. Members will therefore adhere to the following standards:
1. All committee members will review the applicants’ dossiers prior to any meeting at which the committee members are expected to discuss or vote on the candidates.
2. The departmental tenure and promotion committee will schedule meetings at times which allow all members to attend. Members who are ill should inform the chair in advance of any meeting. In the event members cannot attend the meeting at which a vote will be taken, the meeting should be rescheduled. Members must be present at the meeting to cast their votes.
3. Committee members who fail to review the applicants’ dossiers or who fail to participate in committee meetings may be excluded from the final vote.
4. Rules 2 and 3 may be suspended to permit absentee voting if a member of the Tenure and Promotion Committee shall have both a compelling reason for absence and the unanimous consent of the rest of the committee. In such a case documented absentee votes and rationales must be presented in timely fashion to the committee through its chair.
