Dr. Patrick O'Connell

Dr. Patrick L. O’Connell, Associate Professor of Spanish, received his Bachelor’s (1991) and Master’s (1993) degrees in Spanish from California State University-Sacramento and his Doctorate (1997) in Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico. His primary field of research interest is the narrative and poetic representation of history and culture through memory in contemporary Latin American literature (historiographic discourse and the ideological articulation of individual and/or collective identities). He has published essays on several novelists and poets from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Dr. O’Connell served as Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of North Texas (1998-2004) before coming to the University of Central Arkansas. He is a member of the Arkansas Foreign Language Teacher’s Association, American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese, and Southwest Council of Latin American Studies. He has traveled in Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, and Portugal. His life experiences also include fifteen years as a Registered Nurse in California and New Mexico. Dr. O’Connell enjoys teaching courses on grammar, composition, literature, and culture at all levels and endeavors to introduce his students to other cultures through an integrated study of the art, architecture, history, literature, and music of the Hispanic world.
