COUNCIL OF DEANS
February 7, 2001
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 7, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. John Mosbo presided, and the following council members were present: Sam Buchanan, Bob Everding, Neil Hattlestad, Joe Horton, Maurice Lee, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, Ron Toll, and Jane McHaney.
Roden presented the Undergraduate Council minutes of January 16.
Roden moved to recommend an increase in the advanced placement score for Chemistry from 3 to 4. Following a second by Toll, the motion passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommends a change in the number of OTHY 3316 to OTHY 4316. Hattlestad seconded the motion, which was tabled.
Roden moved to recommend two new courses, BIOL 3390 and BIOL 4425. The motion was amended to include a yet to be determined minimum number of biology credits as a prerequisite to BIOL 4425. Following a second by Toll, the motion passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend that CHEM 4320 replace CHEM 4325 as a required course for the ACS BS degree in Chemistry. Following a second by Toll, the motion passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend new courses FREN 2112, SPAN 2112, and GERM 2112. Following a second by Lee, the motion was tabled.
Mosbo led a brief discussion of the Faculty Leadership Program and asked deans to give any additional reactions to McNiece.
Discussion was held on an approval procedure for faculty fellowships when the faculty member is not eligible for a sabbatical leave. Consensus was reached that faculty should file a request with the Reassigned Time/Sabbatical Leave Committee.
Dean Reports
McNiece reminded the council that the Graduate Council minutes were on the web page and ready to be printed.
Everding announced the beginning of the Picasso exhibit at the Baum Gallery with a reception on February 8.
Toll announced that Professor Mike Moran in the Department of Biology had received a $100,000 NIH Area grant.
Roden thanked the deans for their participation in the Freshman Honors Convocation.
