COUNCIL OF DEANS

April 4, 2001

The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. John Mosbo presided, and the following council members were present: Sam Buchanan, Bob Everding, Neil Hattlestad, Joe Horton, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll.

The COD minutes of March 28 were approved as amended.

Mosbo led a discussion of budgeting plans.

Roden asked the deans to help discover ways to more closely tie freshmen to academic departments. Deans were urged to discuss the issue with department chairs. The topic will be revisited at a future meeting.

Lee provided information about rising Hispanic population rates within the state. He asked the deans for input on the role of Spanish education at UCA. Discussion followed.

Mosbo reminded the deans of the monthly focused meeting scheduled for next Monday.

Dean Reports

Horton shared information about budget cuts in corporations, and recent issues in the AACSB.

Lee reminded deans that Cornel West, Harvard professor and author, will speak tonight.

McHaney shared Title II reportcard findings for all program areas; she distributed information from ETS on students taking the PRAXIS I and II examinations. Discussion followed.

Toll provided an update about House Bill 2548. He informed the deans that UCA will host a Science Fair on Friday and Saturday and invited them to view projects that will be displayed in the Farris Center.

Roden reminded the council of the TECHFEST scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, April 17. A discussion followed about students' access to laptop computers.

Mosbo provided information about budgeting.

Following a motion by Horton and second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
