COUNCIL OF DEANS
April 11, 2001
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Bob Everding, Neil Hattlestad, Joe Horton, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll. John Mosbo was absent.
Roden presented the Undergraduate Council minutes of March 27.
Roden moved to recommend a new program for BSE in Secondary Science Education with two tracks pending requested corrections.

Toll seconded the motion, which, following discussion about the number of hours required for completion, passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend SCI 4190, Teaching Internship I. Toll seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend the following course level changes:
BIOL 4403 General Ecology to BIOL 3403
PSCI 3365 Intergovernmental Relations to PSCI 4375 (the change establishes the course as double-listed for inclusion in the MS in Community Development and the BS in Public Administration.
Toll seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend the following modifications to the minor in management.
Delete following courses from minor:

Roden moved to recommend ENGL 4360, History and Development of the English Language. Lee seconded the motion. Following discussion regarding possible duplication of course matter, McNiece moved to table the motion. Everding seconded the motion to table, which passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend the following curriculum changes to the BA in English:
Delete following courses from the major and minor:
WRTG 1320 Academic Writing and Research from English major and minor
WRTG 3301 Rhetoric and Composition from English major and minor
Majors and minors be required to take one of the following:
ENGL 3312 Modern Grammars, or
ENGL 3315 Gender and Language, or
ENGL 4360 History and Development of the English Language
Lee seconded the motion. Discussion followed regarding the possibility of BA students obtaining teacher certification and having no background in writing. McNiece moved to table the proposal and send it back to the Undergraduate Council with the request that the UGC explore the suggestions of the COD. Lee seconded the motion to table, which passed unanimously.
Roden moved to recommend a proposal to allow students to complete BA and BS degrees simultaneously. Lee seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

INFO 2343 Information Processing and Analysis from: Satisfactory score on Microsoft Word competency test to: Knowledge of keyboarding.
Buchanan (1) informed the deans of the Provost's desire to send information to a committee formed earlier to discuss salary budgeting - the deans agreed it was a good idea; (2) reminded the deans of the IDC Brown Bag on promotion and tenure scheduled for Wednesday, April 18; (3) shared a list of retirees who will be honored at a reception on April 24; (4) asked deans to notify the President's Office whether they will attend the AHECB cookout; (5) asked deans to submit computer upgrade information by April 18.
Dean Reports
Lee informed the deans of the upcoming History Day and Humanities Day. He urged participation in TECHFEST next Tuesday.
McNiece asked for nominees for this year's CASE Professor of the Year Award.
Everding announced the upcoming production of the King and I, and stated that tickets were available through the Snow Fine Arts Center box office.
Toll informed the deans that UCA is hosting the Arkansas Academy of Science in Lewis Science Center on Friday and Saturday. He also stated that they expect the largest registration of the annual meeting in several years.
Roden distributed copies of admission letters sent to transfer students; she encouraged participation in TECHFEST and asked deans to urge faculty to come throughout the afternoon, April 17.
Buchanan shared information from a recent Faculty Senate discussion of the student evaluation form.
Following a motion by Horton and a second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
