COUNCIL OF DEANS
August 22, 2001
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 22, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, and Sally Roden. Steve Addison represented Ron Toll.
The COD minutes of August 8 were approved as circulated.
McNiece informed the council that the University College Task Force has submitted its report. She will keep the deans advised about the process as the college is restructured. Discussion followed.
McNiece distributed information about a leadership workshop that will be presented by Dr. Bethel Thomas in October.
McNiece stated that few came to the last project directors' workshop and asked for guidance to build attendance or whether to provide necessary information in a format other than holding a workshop. Discussion followed.
Buchanan reported that the Human Resources Office is now requiring a copy of the social security card for all new hires.
Glenn distributed a list of those courses that show "staff" or "undecided" as the instructor designation and asked that they be corrected before the 11th day of classes.
Buchanan reminded the deans of deadlines for submission of attendance validation forms and stressed the importance of accuracy in the process.
Buchanan requested that he be provided with the names of faculty volunteers for a series of meetings with students similar to the Big Event held last spring.
Buchanan (1) reminded the council of the president's address scheduled for tomorrow; (2) informed the deans of the long-term faculty award recipients and asked that the deans make sure the recipients are present if possible; (3) shared information about a Swiss seminar.
Dean Reports
Lee reported on his group during the Summer Reading Program and suggested a review of the program before next summer.
Roden stated that over 800 students participated in the Summer Reading Program and that early reports have been very good. Data gathered from surveys is being compiled, and she will share that information when it is available.
McHaney reported that Wendy Rickman has been hired as director of the Technical Learning Center (formerly the Learning Resource Center).
McNiece asked if there was interest in sending people to an ACE workshop, Chairing the Academic Department, and stated that there is a discount if several attend. The IDC will help with some of the funding.
Everding reminded the deans that Evita will be performed again next week, August 28-31, at the Center Stage of Snow Fine Arts.
Roden reminded deans that students may also obtain PINs from departmental offices; students do not need to come to the advising center to receive the numbers.
Following a motion by Esteban and a second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
