COUNCIL OF DEANS
August 29, 2001
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll.
The COD minutes of August 22 were approved as circulated.
Glenn distributed information indicating how Advanced Placement credit is currently assigned at UCA. He asked the deans to respond to those examination areas where UCA does not currently award credit. Discussion followed.
Buchanan discussed a memorandum received from Steve Wood, Assistant Vice President for Human Resources, regarding limitations on position allocations. Discussion followed.
Buchanan: (1) reminded deans to send to him the names of faculty who would be willing to give time for a series of meetings with students similar to the Big Event held last spring; (2) shared an e-mail from Glenn Stacks of the UCAPD and asked that the deans relay Stacks' concerns to chairs.
Dean Reports
Glenn: (1) reported on activities of the Instructional Technology Committee, which he now chairs; (2) indicated that work has begun to strengthen an application for a Title III grant; (3) stated that several personnel initiatives were underway in the library, and he will meet with individual library faculty members.
Esteban stated that the first faculty meeting of the College of Business Administration will occur tomorrow.
Lee: (1) shared plans to honor 11 former department chairs in the College of Liberal Arts at the first faculty meeting, which will be held tomorrow; (2) intends to hold a retreat with former chairs to gain an historical perspective of the college; (3) requested the deans to share with him their ideal presidential candidate's qualifications as he is representing their interests on the Presidential Search Committee; (4) repeated an earlier invitation to attend a reception recognizing the accomplishments of two CLA faculty members, Ken Barnes and Gary Wekkin, on September 6.
McHaney: (1) held the first College of Education faculty meeting yesterday; (2) announced the availability of $200,000 in funding from the Hazel Phillips Scholarship program for female students interested in careers in education.
McNiece: (1) reminded deans to submit their nominees to the Sabbatical Leave Committee and University Research Committee to Mike Schaefer, Faculty Senate Committee on Committees; (2) announced plans for three receptions for new faculty to be held at Buffalo Alumni Hall next spring.
Hattlestad called for a discussion of scheduling problems created by late purges. Following discussion, the deans agreed that it may be time to provide on-line schedule information only. Discussions with appropriate personnel will be held in the near future.
Toll reported on plans for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics to hold several meetings at Buffalo Hall.
Roden: (1) expressed her appreciation to the deans for their participation in opening session activities; (2) reported that State and Hughes Residential Colleges are filled and that only a few rooms have triple occupancy - adding that those few have chosen to remain triple; (3) invited the council to participate in an upcoming event, "Lunchapalooza."
Buchanan commended the deans on the quality of the Attendance Validation submissions. He reported that in checking the forms, fewer problems were discovered than ever before and most of those had been identified by the deans' checking process prior to arriving at the Provost's Office.
Following a motion by Esteban and second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
