COUNCIL OF DEANS

September 5, 2001

The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll. Joe Delap represented Maurice Lee.

Shelley Mehl, Director of the Faulkner County United Way, and Jim Brosam, UCA Director of Communications, attended to share information with the deans about the annual campus United Way campaign. McNiece is a co-chair of the on-campus campaign, along with Brosam and Mary Beene of the Office of Human Resources. An informational video was shown, and Mehl spoke briefly asking the deans to encourage participation within their respective areas. Mehl and Brosam departed at 9:45.

The Council of Deans minutes of August 29 were approved as amended.

Buchanan shared copies of memoranda regarding the results of the National Survey of Student Engagement. McNiece stated that the Instructional Development Center will host a "Brown Bag" to discuss areas that might be improved. Buchanan asked that deans urge faculty to attend.

Toll asked for information from other college deans about the timetable relative to mid-probationary review. Discussion followed.

Buchanan asked deans to be sure that memos of explanation accompany travel requests and purchase orders that are after-the-fact.

Buchanan distributed position authorizations. He warned that funds will be limited and some searches may need to be pulled down as those limitations become apparent.

Buchanan distributed copies of revisions to the Board Policy Book.

Dean Reports

Glenn reported that all "staff" and "undecided" designations have been removed from the fall schedule and thanked the deans for staying on top of the situation. He stated that he had spoken with the registrar about the logistics of having an up-to-date schedule on the UCA website. He will pursue the matter further.

Esteban stated that the College of Business Administration had its first faculty meeting. One goal will be to examine and revise admissions standards for programs within the college.

Delap reported that the College of Liberal Arts also had its first faculty meeting. Plaques were given to those who had served as department chairs in the past.

McNiece distributed copies of surveys from Sponsored Programs. She also shared information about a workshop, "The Protection of Human Subjects in Research," scheduled for Friday, September 28.

Everding announced that the Faculty Recital Series will begin tonight with a concert by Linda Hsu and Carl Anthony.

Toll reported that a number of grant proposals are in progress in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, many being proposed by new and junior faculty.

Roden reminded the deans of the live teleconference with Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with a Pearl Earring, scheduled for next Tuesday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m. in Reynolds.

Buchanan shared positive comments made by the President regarding new faculty orientation events, and asked McNiece to pass the comments along to Margaret Morgan, Jeff Allender,

and others involved in planning the orientation activities.

Following a motion by Esteban and second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
