COUNCIL OF DEANS

September 12, 2001

The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, and Sally Roden. Steve Addison represented Ron Toll.

The COD minutes of September 5 were approved as circulated.

Glenn reported on his effort to complete an annual report on faculty performance for the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. Discussion followed.

Buchanan reminded the deans that the list of position approvals does not guarantee funds for the positions. Searches may have to be brought down when funding limitations become evident.

Buchanan (1) reminded deans of a public meeting to discuss the "drinks by the glass" issue; (2) reported that the manager's luncheon has been cancelled; (3) informed the deans of a student memorial service in remembrance of those who lost their lives in New York and Washington DC - the memorial will replace the pep rally this week; (4) reported on the recent work of the emergency response team; (5) discussed the Arkansas Deans' Association meeting.

Dean Reports

Glenn (1) reported that Roger Lewis has expressed concern about some erroneous data entries and asks department chairs to review - Glenn indicates that he may perform the review himself; (2) met with Tony Sitz to discuss the possibility of electronic schedules and identified three goals: a) daily updates of on-line schedule, b) printable format, c) all electronic by spring 2002.

Lee (1) asked that as a preparation for the Academic Administrators' Seminar that the deans go on-line to see if they can easily access affirmative action information; (2) thanked those who attended the College of Liberal Arts' reception honoring outstanding faculty.

McNiece reported that there are consultants from the National Institutes of Health coming to campus for a series of meetings on research with human subjects. Additional information will be forthcoming from the Sponsored Programs Office.

Hattlestad stated that the blood drive previously scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled.

Addison (1) reported on work to develop a 3+2 engineering program with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; (2) announced that the SILO (now SURF) deadline is November 2 and urged participation by faculty as reviewers - there are a few reviewer positions available.

Roden (1) stated that Tracy Chevalier had requested the rescheduling of the live teleconference; (2) reported on visits by college advisors with chairs and deans; (3) distributed information about program initiatives for freshmen.

Following a motion by Esteban and a second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
