COUNCIL OF DEANS

October 24, 2001

The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll. Jimmy Ishee represented Neil Hattlestad, and Joe Hatcher represented Maurice Lee.

The COD minutes of October 10 and October 17 were approved as amended.

Roden presented the Undergraduate Council minutes of October 16.

Roden moved to recommend the following new course:

PSYC 3370 Sports Psychology

Toll seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

McNiece presented the Graduate Council minutes of October 18.

McNiece moved to recommend the following for graduate faculty status:

Buchanan: (1) reported on a recent trip to Northern Michigan University and discussed the NMU model for ubiquitous computing; (2) stated that the information from NMU will be presented to the president and vice president for financial and administrative services tomorrow; (3) reminded the deans to attend President's Scholars Day on November 9, and stated that if they cannot attend a representative should be sent; (4) asked the deans to submit any specific needs for the provost's request to the Budget Advisory Committee.

Dean Reports

Glenn stated that he will attend a conference in Baltimore next week.

Esteban distributed a flyer announcing the first speaker for the College of Business Administration's speaker series, Thomas Bailey, which will be held on November 8.

McHaney reported that approximately 150 high school students participated last week in a State Teacher Recruitment Conference that was held on campus.

McNiece: (1) reminded the deans of the leadership seminar on Monday from 2-4:00 p.m.; (2) reported on United Way participation figures.

Ishee stated that Hattlestad is on an accreditation visit.

Everding shared information from a First-Year Experience conference that he and Joe Delap recently attended.

Roden informed the council that Dr. Patricia Draves has resigned her position as associate dean of undergraduate studies effective January 1.

Following a motion from Esteban and a second from Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:10 a.m.
