COUNCIL OF DEANS
October 31, 2001
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 31, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Bob Everding, Neil Hattlestad, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll. Pat Cantrell represented Gabriel Esteban, Joe Delap represented Maurice Lee, and Jonathan Glenn was out of state.
The COD minutes of October 24 were approved as amended.
Buchanan distributed materials from the American Association for Higher Education describing a Request for Proposals. Buchanan asked deans to respond to him if they knew of any UCA initiatives that would fit the parameters of the RFP.
Buchanan distributed information about general education courses and other courses freshmen may take. He asked the deans to provide by November 21 comparable information about majors courses.
Jack Gillean, Vice President for University Relations, joined the meeting to represent the University Counsel in the drawing of names for a grievance committee. The COD monitored the process as required by university policy. Gillean departed following completion of the selection.
Buchanan reminded the deans to participate in Family Day events this Saturday.
Dean Reports
McNiece reported that the Sabbatical Leave Review Committee has submitted its recommendations to the Provost.
Hattlestad announced that Dr. Barbara Williams, Chair of the Nursing Department, was named Arkansas Nurse of the Year, and he invited the deans to attend a reception in her honor scheduled for later in the day.
Everding (1) announced that the Arkansas Music Educators Association will hold its annual conference at UCA tomorrow; (2) reported that the Arkansas Open Marching Championship, a statewide high school band competition, was on campus last week.
Toll stated that he attended the first meeting of the Budget Advisory Committee yesterday.
Roden asked deans to urge their general education faculty to complete and return the Technology/General Education Survey for Fall 2001 that was distributed to them earlier this semester.
Following a motion by Cantrell and a second by Everding, the meeting adjourned at 10:10 a.m.
