COUNCIL OF DEANS

November 28, 2001

The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2001, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll.

Peter Mehl attended to present the minutes of the General Education Council.

Mehl presented a recommendation to allow BA music majors to substitute either MUS 3302 or 3303-Music History I or II, for the fine arts area; and for BA and BFA art majors to use either ART 2325-Asian Art Survey, ART 2335-Art History/Ancient, or ART 2336-Art History/Renaissance to Modern for the fine arts area requirement. Roden moved to endorse the recommendation of the GEC. Everding seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Mehl presented the following information item:

Title Change:

MATH 1360 from Mathematics for General Education to Mathematics in Society.

Following the presentation of the GEC minutes, Mehl departed.

McNiece presented the Graduate Council Minutes of November 15.

McNiece moved to recommend the following applicants for Graduate Faculty status:

McNiece distributed an informational flyer and discussed the importance of following compliance guidelines for the protection of human research subjects. She urged anyone with compliance questions to contact Betty Hamilton in the Office of Sponsored Programs.

McNiece reminded the deans of budgetary obligations for internal grant applications for faculty and students, but also acknowledged that recent reductions would adversely affect internal awards.

Due to the absence of the secretary to the COD, there are no minutes for announcements or dean reports.

Following a motion by Esteban and a second by Everding, the meeting adjourned.
