COUNCIL OF DEANS
January 9, 2002
The Council of Deans met in regular session at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2002, in the Provost's Conference Room. Sam Buchanan presided, and the following council members were present: Gabriel Esteban, Bob Everding, Jonathan Glenn, Neil Hattlestad, Maurice Lee, Jane McHaney, Elaine McNiece, Sally Roden, and Ron Toll.
Tony Sitz, Registrar, attended to present options for the 2002-2003 academic calendar. Following discussion, the COD recommended Option #1. While Sitz was still present Buchanan reminded the deans of the upcoming attendance validation process and urged them to monitor the process closely. Sitz indicated that blank forms will be distributed to the deans on January 18.
Buchanan informed the deans of a telephone meeting of the Board of Trustees scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Items to be considered are the transfer of "D" grades and the chair of the presidential search committee.
McNiece presented information about the McNair Scholarship, a program designed to assist low-income or disadvantaged students who wish to attend graduate school. She asked deans to send to her the names of college representatives who could furnish information.
Buchanan (1) reported on additional budgetary reductions; (2) led a discussion of the composition of the COD and whether, given the interim status of the central administration, there is a need for weekly COD meetings.
Dean Reports
Lee discussed plans to discuss religious intolerance. He stated that he would like to see workshops dealing with racism as well.
McHaney (1) discussed a forthcoming survey of deans and chairs regarding topics for a panel discussion and workshop; (2) reported on yesterday's productive meeting of the professional education unit.
McNiece distributed an informational flyer about the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Hattlestad (1) distributed a college newsletter; (2) announced that physical therapy has graduated the first two DPT students.
Toll (1) informed the deans of a memorial service for Fred Dalske on January 17; (2) shared information from CUR regarding submissions for an upcoming publication; (3) will send CUR workshop information via e-mail.
Roden asked deans to remind faculty that students with disabilities must be accommodated according to ADA guidelines.
Following a motion from Esteban and a second from Everding, the meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
