University of Central Arkansas. Our mission is to provide students with the conceptual and analytic tools to examine the social world using a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. A bachelor's degree in sociology provides students with an excellent liberal arts foundation for various career and educational paths. Sociology majors have gone on to establish careers in such fields as geriatrics, hospital administration, human services, policing, sales, and social research. In addition, our majors continue their education in various graduate programs including counseling, criminal justice, forensic science, law, physical therapy, public administration, and sociology. The optional criminology and medical concentrations within the major meet the needs of students with interests and career plans in these areas while providing a general background in sociology. Students pursuing degrees in sociology develop an understanding of the logic and techniques of examining human social behavior, an ability to critically consider social issues, an understanding of sociological concepts and their application to human problems, and practical skills and knowledge applicable to future employment.
The Department is committed to providing the best education possible for its students; one that expands students' intellectual understanding of the world, develops critical reasoning, fosters communication, and hones research skills. To this end, in addition to the traditional course offerings, faculty in the Department have developed a number of innovative courses. Students receive "hands-on" experience in an agency of their choice through our Internship class. Cultural immersion is achieved through our Travel Seminar classes that take our students to such places as Belize, Honduras, and Navajo reservations. Technological skills are expanded through the use of WEBCT, SPSS, etc. Finally, for the highly motivated student, individual research projects are supervised through our Selected Problems courses.
I invite you to learn more about the opportunities associated with a degree in sociology. Students are directed to the web page of our national organization, the American Sociological Association (http://www.asanet.org), for additional information concerning the discipline, career opportunities, and graduate programs. Please feel free to contact me or any of the faculty if we can be of assistance. We'd love to spend some time with you discussing the program and what it can offer!
