We are a dynamic community of faculty, staff, and students.  All of us interact in a myriad of situations and settings with people throughout our lives.  We both influence and are influenced on a variety of levels by this social world.  Our mission is to provide students with the conceptual and analytical tools to examine the social world using a host of theoretical and methodological approaches.  Whether you want to make a difference in your community through service or activism, gain skills to enter a career field, or pursue graduate studies, the study of sociology will give you the opportunities and tools to understand your world better.

With a bachelor’s degree in sociology students receive an excellent liberal arts foundation which acts as a springboard for life.  Our students have followed their passions in a variety of graduate programs, including sociology, counseling, criminal justice, law, public administration, and physical therapy. They have gone on to build careers in such fields as geriatrics, hospital administration, human services, policing, sales, and social research. The optional criminology and medical concentrations within the major allow students to complete focused course work while maintaining a liberal arts core in sociology. We also offer a new minor in anthropology, which gives students an additional window into understanding social and cultural life.  

Moreover, the Department offers a range of opportunities for students to explore life choices and apply their course work beyond the classroom.  For example, students receive hands-on experience in a community organization of their choice through our Internship class.  Students may immerse themselves in another culture through our Travel Seminar classes, which include experiences in such places as Belize and Honduras. Additionally, faculty members help students develop practical technological skills through the use of WEBCT, SPSS, and other computer applications.  Finally, for the highly motivated student, we supervise individual research projects through the Selected Problems courses.
