Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
April 17, 2001
Members Present:
Ami Barile, Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, Karen Craig, David Harvey, Debbie Howell-Creswell, David Kim, Lauretta Koenigseder, Jim Mainord, Conrad Stanitski, Tony Sitz, and Rebecca Williams.
Members Absent:
Catherine Acre, Rob Holden, Dawn Jakubowski, Ira Saltz, and Wayne Stengel.
The items of the agenda included:
I. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair of Undergraduate Council.
II. Minutes of the March 27, 2001 meeting were approved with the following correction. Under curriculum changes to the B.A. English major and minor, let it show the motion to approve passed unanimously.
III. Dr. Becky Williams, Chair of Subcommittee II, reported on suggestions to improve the new course proposal form and the proposal for curriculum change form. Dr. Williams moved to recommend approval of the revisions which will become effective Fall 2001. Dr. Howell-Creswell seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
IV. Dr. David Kim, Chair of Subcommittee III, moved to recommend approval of UNIV 1105 - Introduction to Educational Technology for SMARTS Students. Dr. Barile seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
V. Report of Subcommittee II
Dr. Williams, Chair of Subcommittee II, moved to recommend approval of WRTG 4330 - Linguistics for Educators. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Williams moved to recommend approval of INFO 3315 - Diversity/Multicultural Communications. Dr. Craig seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 7 yes, 3 no, 1 abstention.
Dr. Williams moved to recommend approval of 12 new course proposals for the IEP curriculum:
Level One
IEP 1310 - Level 1 Pronunciation, Conversation, and Public Speaking
IEP 1615 - Level 1 Academic Writing and Grammar
IEP 1620 - Level 1 Academic Classroom Skills
Level Two
IEP 1325 - Level 2 Pronunciation, Conversation, and Public Speaking
IEP 1635 - Level 2 Academic Writing and Grammar
IEP 1630 - Level 2 Academic Classroom Skills
Level Three
IEP 1340 - Level 3 Pronunciation, Conversation, and Public Speaking
IEP 1645 - Level 3 Academic Writing and Grammar
IEP 1650 - Level 3 Academic Classroom SkillsIEP 1355 - Vocabulary Building Elective
IEP 1360 - Computer Literacy and Research Skills Elective
IEP 1365 - TOEFL Preparation Course
Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Williams moved to recommend approval of the following three courses:
FLAN 1305 - Level 1 Intensive English Core Program
FLAN 1306 - Level 2 Intensive English Core Program
FLAN 2300 - Level 3 Intensive English Core Program
Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Academic credit of three hours toward graduation would be granted for successful completion of each level with a 2.5 or better gpa, with a maximum of nine hours of credit for all three levels. A student
=s registration in FLAN 1305, 1306, or 2300 would automatically place that student in all of the IEP courses for the designated level. Dr. Dr. Bailey and Lynn Ramage-Schaefer were invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 7 yes, 0 no, 3 abstentions.Dr. Williams moved to recommend approval of credit for the B.A. foreign language requirement to students whose native language is not English by one of the following provisions:
=s current policy for students studying other foreign languages. Under the proposed option, students would meet the B.A. foreign language requirement and receive nine hours of elective credit by completing IEP Level 3 with a GPA of 3.0 or better.Provision A A TOEFL score of 500 or successful completion of Level 3 of the IEP.
Provision B A credit-by-examination option that parallels UCA
Dr. Harvey seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 7 yes, 1 no, 1 abstention.
VI. Report of Subcommittee III
Dr. David Kim, Chair of Subcommittee III moved to recommend to table the African and African-American Studies minor until the following concerns can be addressed by the English Department.
1. Three new courses (INDS 23xx, HIST 43xx, and PHIL 23xx) have not been submitted to the Undergraduate Council for approval.
2. Concerns with the structure of the minor core. The only required core course is INDS 23xx (which has not been approved.) The committee felt the core should be better defined.
3. Staffing for the minor. Are instructors that teach the courses aware of possible changes in enrollment once the minor is approved? Have they agreed to be part of this program?
Dr. Williams seconded the motion. Motion to table passed unanimously.
Dr. Kim moved to recommend approval requiring students to earn at least a
AC@ in all Speech-Language Pathology classes. This policy change is designed to ensure that students can be successful in more advanced courses. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.Dr. Kim moved to recommend approval of PHIL 4330 - Philosophy of Language with the addition that a major or minor in writing and rhetoric and English be included with the department chair
=s approval. Dr. Mainord seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.Dr. Kim moved to recommend approval of changes in requirements for the B.S. degree program in Athletic Training.
Changes include:
I. Deletion of KPED 2300 - Principles of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
II. Resequence KPED 4350 - Athletic Training Clinical Experiences III and 4305 - Athletic Training Clinical Experiences IV in ascending order to KPED 4306 - Athletic Training Clinical Experiences III and KPED 4307 - Athletic Training Clinical Experiences IV.
III. Change KPED 4395 - Sport in American Society from an elective to a required course.
IV. Change course and hour level for KPED 4210 - Modalities for Athletic Trainers to KPED 3345.
V. Change hour level for KPED 4220 - Exercise Rehabilitation in Athletic Training to KPED 4335
Dr. Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
VII. Dr. Craig moved to recommend denial of the
AD@ grade recommendation from the Athletic Committee for further study by other committees and other groups. The council is willing to consider the recommendation again after further information is given to them. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion to deny passed unanimously.VIII. Chair Roden asked Subcommittee III to reconsider the proposed changes in the English curriculum which was returned to the council by the Council of Deans for additional clarification.
1. What is the focus of the English major with their curriculum.
2. What student outcomes is the English Department expecting.
3. Look at mission and goals and what they are to be assessed on.
4. If they are preparing teachers for alternative certification of English, should they not have more writing.
5. Look at ENGL 4360 - History and Development of the English Language to see if it is being duplicated in other departments.
IX. Chair Roden thanked Cathy Acre, Rob Holden, David Kim, and Karen Craig for serving on the 2000/2001 Undergraduate Council.
X. Information items:
1. Add INFO 3364 - Desktop Publishing for technology endorsement for BMED certification.
2. Delete INFO 4362 - Administrative Information Management which is no longer needed for certification.
3. INFO 3321 - Managing Systems and Technology will serve as the management course for BMED teacher certification.
4. Delete INFO 3365 - Database Applications which is no longer needed for certification.
