Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
April 21, 2005
Members Present:
George Bratton, Lynn Burley, Lorien Foote, Richard Gaughan, Mary Harlan, Charles Harvey, Joe Horton, Kevin Kendrick, Bill Kordsmeier, Mike Scoles, Ann Witcher, Valerie Williams, and Steve Zeltmann.
Members Absent:
Joe Anderson, Michelle Bridges, Jennifer Johnson, Elizabeth Smith, Conrad Stanitski, Jeff Whittingham, and Tony Sitz
The action items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Minutes of the March 22, 2005 meeting were approved as circulated.
3. Chair Roden thanked Charles Harvey, Joe Horton, Jennifer Johnson, and Conrad Stanitski, as their terms expire, for their service on the Undergraduate Council.
4. Report of Subcommittee I, Ann Witcher, Chair
Dr. Bratton moved to remove HIST 4338 – American History Through Film from the table. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Chair Witcher moved to recommend approval of HIST 4338 – American History Through Film. Dr. Harlan seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Bratton moved to remove a revision in RN-to-BSN track within the baccalaureate degree in the Nursing Program from the table. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Dr. Witcher moved to recommend approval of the revision in RN-to-BSN track. Dr. Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Witcher moved to recommend approval of CSCI 4353 – Introduction to Multimedia Computing. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Witcher moved to recommend approval to add WRTG 2350 – World Languages as an elective in the Linguistics Minor. Dr. Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Witcher moved to recommend approval of WRTG 4324 – Topics in Creative Writing. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. David Harvey, Chair of Writing and Speech, was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 9 yes, 3 no, 0 abstentions.
Chair Roden turned the chair over to Dr. Horton for the council’s consideration of UNIV 1320 – Beginning Algebra and the change of three attempts policy for UNIV 1340 to accommodate Beginning Algebra. Dr. Witcher brought to the council without a subcommittee recommendation UNIV 1320 – Beginning Algebra. Dr. Burley moved to recommend approval of UNIV 1320 – Beginning Algebra. Dr. Bratton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Mr. John Gale, Director of University College and Ms. Lisa Christman, Lecture I, were invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 6 yes, 4 no, 1 abstention.
Dr. Bratton moved to recommend approval of the change of three attempts policy for UNIV 1340 – Intermediate Algebra to include UNIV 1320 – Beginning Algebra. Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Report of Subcommittee II – Joe Horton, Chair.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval to change ECSE 4600 – Instructional Strategies in ECE to the following two three-hour courses along with course title changes; ECSE 4315 – Instructional Strategies for Language Arts and Social Studies ECE and ECSE 4316 – Instructional Strategies for Math and Science ECE. Also to change ECSE 4610 – Integrated Curriculum, Planning and Assessment to the following two three-hour courses along with course title changes; ECSE 4330 – Integrated Curriculum in Early Childhood Education and ECSE 4331 – Assessment in Early Childhood Education. Dr. Witcher seconded the motion. Motion passed 11 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of a change to the Retention Policy for the Department of Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
6. Report of Subcommittee III, Lorien Foote, Interim Chair
Dr. Foote moved to recommend approval for a change in course format to electronic delivery for MGMT 4347 – Managing Policy and Strategy. Dr. Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Foote moved to recommend approval to change GEOG 2375 – Cartography from an elective to a required course for the MIS major, GIS/Spatial Systems Track. Dr. Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Foote moved to recommend approval of FACS 3390 – Nutrition and Metabolism. Dr. Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
The information items of the agenda included:
1. Department of Physical Therapy - Reinstatement of courses inadvertently deleted without interruption:
PTHY 4190 – Topics in Physical Therapy: International Studies Seminar
PTHY 4290 - Topics in Physical Therapy: International Study Field Trip
2. Department of Speech-Language Pathology - Change the following from required courses to electives:
PSYC 2370 – Developmental Psychology
MATH 2311 or PSYC 2330 or SOC 2321
3. University College – bulletin revision for UNIV 1340 – Intermediate Algebra
4. Department of Management Information Systems
a. MIS 4329 – prerequisite and bulletin change
b. MIS 2343 – prerequisite and bulletin change
c. MIS major – GIS/Spatial Systems Track – bulletin revision
5. Department of Mass Communication and Theatre
a. THEA 3324 – Dramatic Theory and Literature title change to Theatre History I
b. THEA 3325 – Theatre History title change to Theatre History II
