Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

August 3, 2006

Members Present:

Joe Anderson, George Bratton, Lynn Burley, Richard Gaughan, Joe Horton, Patty Phelps, Steve Zeltmann, Han-Chieh Wei, Jeff Whittingham, and Tony Sitz.

Members Absent:

Steve Addison, Lorien Foote, Brooks Green, Mary Harlan, Bill Kordsmeier, Erick McCarthy, Elizabeth Smith, and Ann Witcher.

The items of the agenda included:

1. Meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.

2. Minutes of the April 18, 2006 meeting were approved as circulated.

3. Report of Subcommittee I – Richard Gaughan, Interim Chair

Interim Chair Gaughan moved to recommend approval to revisions of the Geography: Environmental Science Planning and Administration track. Dr. Bratton seconded the motion. Revisions include:

  • Change in program hours from 45 to 43
  • GEOG 2375 – Cartography to change from elective to required
  • MIS 3321 – Managing Systems & Technology to change from required to elective
  • PSCI 2340 – State & Local Government to change from required to elective
  • GEOG 2345 – Geographic Information Techniques to delete from major core
  • SOC 1300 – Principles of Sociology to delete from major core
  • WRTG 3310 – Technical Writing to add to required core
  • BIOL 3403 – General Ecology to change from elective to required in all Environmental Science tracks
  •           Dr. Burley informed the council that the Writing and Speech Department approves of the WRTG 3310 change. Motion passed unanimously.

    Interim Chair Gaughan moved to recommend approval of a new 18 hour Minor in Addiction Studies – Treatment track. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

    Interim Chair Gaughan moved to recommend approval of HSC 1110 – Introduction to Medical Terminology with submission of a bibliography. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. Emogene Fox was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 8 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention.

    Interim Chair Gaughan moved to recommend approval to change MIS 4366 – Advanced Web Design and Development from an elective to a requirement in the MIS End-User/Internet track and a title change to E-Commerce and Advanced Website Development. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

    4. Report of Subcommittee II – Jeff Whittingham, Chair

             Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval of changes to the Department of Music to include the following:

  • A new 132 hour Bachelor of Music in Composition degree
  • MUSA 2260 – Composition Applied Instruction (new course)
  • MUSA 4460 – Composition Applied Instruction (new course)
  • MUS 3233 – Composition level change to MUS 2233 with justification and title change to Composition Class
  • Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. Jarvis was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed unanimously.

    Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval for MUS 4310 – Special Studies in Music a prerequisite change and bulletin revision from Invitation from the music honors committee to a 3.0 accumulative G.P.A., 3.2 music G.P.A., successful proposal submitted to and approved by departmental honors committee.

    Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

    Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval to establish a specific set of undergraduate level courses with a UCAC (UCA Consortium) prefix for the consortium program to include:

    1101, 1202, 1303, 1404, 1505, 1606
    2101, 2202, 2303, 2404, 2505, 2606
    3101, 3202, 3303, 3404, 3505, 3606
    4101, 4202, 4303, 4404, 4505, 4606

    Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

    Chair Whittingham commended the Department of Political Science for their Public Administration External Review.

    The information items included:

    1. ENVR 3410 – Introduction to Environmental Science title change to Environmental Theory and Application.

    2. Delete the Associate of Applied Science degree program in Child Care Management

    3. MIS 2343 – Desktop Decision Support Technologies conversion of existing traditional courses to allow electronic delivery.

    4. MIS 3363 – Telecommunications and Computer Networks prerequisite change from MIS 1370 or CSCI 1470 and MIS 3321 to none.

    5. MIS 4339 – Computer Applications in Business title change to Programming in JAVA

    6. MIS End-User/Internet track title change to MIS Web Development/E-Commerce track

    7. MATH 1591 – Calculus I conversion of existing traditional courses to allow electronic delivery

    8. MUS 4310 – Special Studies in Music bulletin description revision

    9. Bulletin revision for the Honors Program in Music

    10. Abbreviated title change for MUSA 4260 – Composition Applied Instruction

    11. NURS 3200 – Transition to Professional Nursing conversion of existing traditional courses to electronic delivery

    12. NURS 4213 – Research in Nursing conversion of existing traditional courses to allow electronic delivery
