Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

Meeting was called to
order by Dr. Tammy Benson, Interim Chair.
2.
Minutes of the November 19, 2002 meeting were approved.
The
action items included:
1.
Report of Subcommittee I
Dr. Charles Harvey, Chair of Subcommittee I, moved to recommend approval to expand the current 7-12 licensure for Foreign Language Education to include P-8 licensure. Dr. Joe Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Syllabi from WLAN 4315 – Methods of Teaching Second Languages and WLAN 4350 – Internship I, were provided to show how P-8 competencies are referenced within the courses. Motion passed 12 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention.
2. Report of Subcommittee II
Dr.
Joe Horton, Chair of Subcommittee II, moved to recommend approval of HIST 4392
– Internship in Southern History (new course.)
Dr. Becky Williams seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of WRTG
2315 – Introduction to Dramatic Writing (new course.)
Dr. Jakubowski seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of WRTG
3320 – Forms of Scriptwriting (new course.) Dr. Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of WRTG
3325 – Forms of Poetry (new course.) Dr.
Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend a change in
course level from WRTG 3310 – Technical Writing to WRTG 4310 – Technical
Writing. Dr. Horton then informed
the council that instead of changing level of course from 3310 to 4310 that a
change in prerequisite to junior status would meet with the Writing Department
approval. Dr. Horton made a
motion to change WRTG 3310 – Technical Writing prerequisite to reflect
junior status. Dr. Charles Harvey
seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
3.
Report of Subcommittee III
Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Chair of Subcommittee III, moved to recommend
approval to change course level from MCOM 2334 – Nonfiction Writing to MCOM
3334 – Nonfiction Writing. Dr.
Mohamed Nour seconded the motion. Discussion
followed. Motion passed
unanimously.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend adding MCOM
3300 – Advanced Reporting as an elective in the telecommunications emphasis
of the Mass Communication degree. Dr.
Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend the double
listing of SPCH 3221/3321 – Communication Internship with MCOM 3221/3321 –
Mass Communication Internship. Dr.
Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Discussion
followed. Motion passed
unanimously.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend MCOM 3391/4391
– Topics in Mass Communication (new course.)
Dr. Johnson informed the council of subcommittee recommendations of the
following changes needed to the proposal:
1. Change proposed
effective date for the course (currently listed as Spring
2003)
2. Reword bulletin
description to clarify “may be repeated for credit up to 6 hours.”
3. Include prerequisites
4. Make more explicit
the grading criteria on the sample syllabus.
Mandy Maples moved to table and send back to the department for
revisions. Dr. Charles Harvey
seconded the motion. Motion
passed 9 yes, 4 no, 0 abstentions.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend approval of THEA 3320 – Digital Design
for Theatre Artists (new course) with the submission of a revised bulletin
description to include prerequisites, frequency of offering, and elective
designation. Dr. Horton seconded
the motion. Discussion followed.
Motion passed unanimously.
Dr.
Johnson moved to recommend approval of THEA 4310 – Costume Construction (new
course) with the submission of a revised bulletin description to include
prerequisites, frequency of offering, and elective designation.
Mandy Maples seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend approval of
THEA 4390 – Acting for the Camera (new course.) Dr. Johnson informed the council of subcommittee
recommendations of the following changes needed to the proposal:
1.
Check the appropriate box to indicate this is not a new prefix.
2.
Indicate is this is a one or two semester course.
3. Expand bulletin
description to sufficiently describe the content, prerequisites,
frequency of offering, and elective designation.
Dr. Williams moved to table and send back to the department for
revisions. Mandy Maples seconded
the motion. Motion passed 11
yes, 0 no, 2 abstentions.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend approval to change THEA 2325 –
Fundamentals of Theatrical Design from a required course to an elective for
Theatre majors. Dr. Horton
seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
Dr. Johnson moved to recommend approval to change THEA 4340 – Scene
Design from a required course to an elective.
Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
