Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

January 16, 2001

Members Present:

Ami Barile, Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, Karen Craig, David Harvey, Rob Holden, Dawn Jakubowski, David Kim, Lauretta Koenigseder, Jim Mainord, Conrad Stanitski, Wayne Stengel, Rebecca Williams, and Valerie Williams.

Members Absent:

Catherine Acre, Debbie Howell-Criswell, Ira Saltz, and Tony Sitz.

The items of the agenda included:

I.     Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally Roden, Chair of Undergraduate Council.

II.    Minutes of the November 21, 2000 meeting

The minutes of the November 21, 2000 meeting of the Undergraduate Council were accepted as circulated.

III. Report from Subcommittee I

Dr. Debbie Howell-Creswell, Chair of Subcommittee I, moved to recommend approval to increase the minimum for advanced placement credit in Chemistry from 3 to 4 for CHEM 1450 credit and from 4 to 5 for CHEM 1450/1451 credit. Dr. Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Dr. Howell-Creswell moved to recommend approval of a course number change from OTHY 3316 - Human Development I to OTHY 4316. Dr. Mainord seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Dr. Howell-Creswell moved to recommend approval of a new course - BIOL 3390 - Economic Botany. Dr. Holden seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Dr. Howell-Creswell moved to recommend approval of a new course - BIOL 4425 - Experimental Neurobiology. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

Dr. Howell-Creswell moved to recommend approval to change CHEM 4320 - Biochemistry from and elective to a required course. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Discussion followed. CHEM 4320 as a required course will replace CHEM 4385 - Topics in Advanced Chemistry which will become an elective. Motion passed unanimously.

IV.    Report from Subcommittee III

Dr. David Kim, Chair, Subcommittee III, recommended approval of new courses - FREN 2112 - Communicating in French; GERM 2112 - Communicating in German; and SPAN 2112 - Communicating in Spanish. Dr. Mainord seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Dr. Kim moved to recommend a change to allow students to pursue simultaneously two degrees (e.g., the B.A. and B.S. degrees.) Dr. Mainord seconded the motion. Discussion followed including the advantages of a second degree vice a double major, and questions regarding meeting the major and minor requirements of two programs simultaneously. Dr. Kim moved to table until the next Undergraduate Council meeting to allow for further review. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

1.     FREN 1211 - Communicating in French I
2.     FREN 2212 - Communicating in French II
3.     GERM 1211 - Communicating in German I
4.     GERM 2212 - Communicating in German II
5.     SPAN 1211 - Communicating in Spanish I
6.     SPAN 2212 - Communicating in Spanish II
7.     SPAN 1111 - Basic Spanish Communication
8.     FREN 1111 - Basic French Communication
9.     GERM 1111 - Basic German Communication

II.     Chair Roden discussed a request from the Art Department inquiring about the feasibility of offering a B.A. Studio degree with an art history major. The council will review this request further at the next Undergraduate Council meeting.

Meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.
