Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

1.
Meeting was called to order by Chair Roden.
2. Minutes of the
February 18, 2003, meeting were approved with the correction of WRTG 3325 –
Forms of Poetry, to show under bulletin description it is the writing of
poetry not the study of poetry.
The action items included:
1. Report of
Subcommittee I
Dr.
Charles Harvey, Chair of Subcommittee I, moved to recommend approval to add
CHEM 1400 – Chemistry in Society as a requirement and delete CHEM 3430 –
Chemistry for Middle School as a requirement for Middle Level Math/Science
emphasis. Dr. Jakubowski seconded
the motion. Motion
passed 12 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention.
Dr.
Charles Harvey moved to recommend approval to add WRTG 4340 – Teaching
Creative Writing as a requirement for BSE/Middle Level degree.
Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Discussion
followed whether or not this is the best course for the middle level degree.
Dr. David Harvey moved to table. Dr.
Harlan seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
Dr.
Charles Harvey moved to recommend approval to delete WRTG 3305 – Advanced
Composition as a requirement for BSE/Middle Level degree.
Dr. Jakubowski seconded the motion.
Discussion followed if it would be best not to delete the course at
this time and to delete it when the appropriate required course is determined.
Dr. Benson moved to table. Dr.
Harlan seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr.
Charles Harvey moved to recommend approval to delete BMED 4325 –
Applications of Computers in Education and to replace it with MSIT 4325 –
Literacy Development in Content Areas as a requirement for the
Business/Marketing Technology Education degree.
Dr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
Dr.
Charles Harvey moved to recommend a course level change from BIOL 4525 –
General Microbiology to BIOL 4420. Dr.
Jakubowski seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
2. Report of
Subcommittee II
Dr.
Joe Horton, Chair of Subcommittee II, moved to recommend approval of MUS 11D1
– Piccolo with confirmation whether the course is a requirement or elective.
Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously. Dr.
Carolyn Brown was contacted and verified the course is to be an elective.
Dr.
Horton moved to recommend approval of changes in the Bachelor of Science in
Nursing curriculum. There will be
no change in the total credit hours required for graduation.

Harlan seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr.
Barbara Williams was invited in to answer council questions.
Discussion continued. Motion
passed unanimously.
3. Report of
Subcommittee III
Dr.
Jennifer Johnson, Chair of Subcommittee III, moved to recommend approval of
new courses contingent upon the development of a new track in Public
Relations: SPCH 2320 – Introduction to Communication Research; SPCH 3305 –
Public Relations Techniques; SPCH 4305 – Public Relations Cases and
Campaigns; SPCH 4308 – Public Relations Management; SPCH 4315 –
Communication and Leadership; SPCH 4380 – Directed Study in Communication;
WRTG 4310 – Creative Writing with Hypertexts; and Prefix change from MCOM
3310 – Writing for Public Relations to SPCH 3310.
Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Discussion
followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr.
Johnson moved to remove from the table MCOM 3391/4391 – Topics in
Communication. Dr. Jakubowski
seconded the motion. Department
of Mass Communication and Theatre provided the council with revisions
requested. Dr. Johnson moved to
approve MCOM 3391/4391 – Topics in Communication with the revisions.
Dr. Bedner seconded the motion. Motion
passed unanimously.
