Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

March 19, 2002

Members Present:

Joe Arn, Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, Charles Harvey, David Harvey, Debbie Howell, Joe Horton, Jennifer Johnson, Lauretta Koenigseder, Gaylon Ross, Charles Seifert, Tony Sitz and Becky Williams.

Members Absent:

Ami Barile and Dawn Jakubowski.

The items of the agenda included:

1. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.

2. Minutes of the February 19, 2002 meeting were approved as circulated. A correction was made to the minutes of the January 29, 2002 minutes to include a prerequisite change to read SCI 4410 and SCI 3420 instead of BIOL 4410 and BIOL 3420.

3. Report of Subcommittee II - Dr. Tammy Benson, Chair

a. Dr. Benson moved to recommend approval of changing PSCI 3313 - Research Design from an elective to a requirement in the major. This will increase the total hours for a political science major from 33 to 36. Dr. Cangelosi seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

b. Dr. Benson moved to recommend approval of changing GEOG 3311 - Geographic Information Systems from an elective to a requirement for geography majors. GEOG 3320 - Field Studies will no longer be a requirement for geography majors, however, field work experiences are integrated in other courses. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

c. Dr. Benson moved to recommend approval of a level change from MATH 2561 to MATH 1592 - Calculus II. Dr. Seifert seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

d. Dr. Benson moved to recommend approval of awarding three hours of Advanced Placement credit for MATH 2311 - Statistical Methods I with a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement Statistics exam. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

e. Dr. Benson moved to recommend approval of a new course SPAN 1330 - Elementary Spanish in Review. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

4. Report of Subcommittee III - Dr. David Harvey, Chair

1. Recommended program changes to the Athletic Training Program. Changes are being made to bring the curriculum into compliance with criteria of the Joint Review Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

a. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of deleting KPED 2340 – Motor Development and Learning and KPED 3331 – Care and Prevention of Exercise and Sport Injuries as a requirement for the Athletic Training major only and not from other KPED degree programs and the substitution of KPED 1125 – Conditioning Activities and KPED 1135 – Beginning Weight Training as a requirement in lieu of the two-hour sport course requirement selected from one of the following courses KPED 2214, 2215, 2216, 2224, 2225 or 2226. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

b. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of a new course KPED 2353 – Prevention, Recognition and Care of General Medical Pathology. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

c. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of a prerequisite change for KPED 1350 – Introduction to Athletic Training to allow BIOL 1400 or BIOL 1440 with a "C" or better to meet pre-requisites for admission to Athletic Training Education Program. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

d. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of proposed changes in admission requirements;

1. From a 2.7 cumulative grade point average to a 2.5.

2. Establish a professional grade point average of a 3.0.

3. Change from a second-year fall to a second-year spring admission date.

4. Change in Biology prerequisite for KPED 1350.

5. Completion of KPED 1350 with a "B" or better.

6. Satisfactory performance on two basic injury evaluations during KPED 1350.

7. Completion of 100 hours of clinical observation during KPED 1350.

8. Completion of the technical standards form as required by The Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training.

9. A student failing to meet the minimum grade requirements in the athletic training core will not be allowed to continue to more advanced training core courses until the minimum grade requirement is met.

10. Change in total number of hours from 126 to 125.

Degree requirements 125 hours

KPED core curriculum 22 hours

Athletic Training Core 39 hours

Related requirements 27 hours

Dr. Ross seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

e. Dr. Harvey moved to recommend approval of the following course number changes:

KPED 3341 to KPED 3327 – Athletic Training Clinical Experiences II

KPED 4307 to KPED 4327 – Athletic Training Clinical Experience IV

KPED 3340 to KPED 4301 – Athletic Training Clinical Experiences III

KPED 4306 to KPED 3301 – Athletic Training Clinical Experiences I

KPED 3350 to KPED 3354 – Evaluation Techniques for Upper Extremity

KPED 4335 to KPED 3335 – Therapeutic Exercise

And to delete the following courses as an elective for allied health students:

Dr. Seifert seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

2. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of a new course INSU 3330 – Surplus Lines and Reinsurance. Dr. Ross seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

3. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval to cross list INSU 4315 – Employee Benefits as INSU4315/MGMT 4315 – Employee Benefits. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

4. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of a new course MIS 1370 – Introduction to Computer Architecture and Programming. Dr. Koenigseder seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

5. Dr. David Harvey moved to recommend approval of a 2.25 cumulative grade point average in order to minor in Information Systems. Dr. Cangelosi seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
