Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting

November 15, 2005

Members Present:

Steve Addison, Joe Anderson, George Bratton, Lynn Burley, Lorien Foote, Richard Gaughan, Bill Kordsmeier, Erick McCarthy, Patty Phelps, Han-Chieh Wei, Jeff Whittingham, Ann Witcher, Steve Zeltmann, and Valerie Williams.

Members Absent:

Brooks Green, Mary Harlan, and Elizabeth Smith.

The items of the agenda included:

1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.

2. Minutes of the October 18, 2005 meeting were approved as circulated.

3. Report of Subcommittee II – Jeff Whittingham, Chair.

Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval of ART 3329 – Ancient Mesoamerican Art. Lynn Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed     unanimously.

Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval of BIOL 4390/4490 - Special Topics in Biology; BIOL - 3185/3285/3385/4185/4285/4385 – Undergraduate Research; and a credit hour change for BIOL 4355 to BIOL 4155. Lynn Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Chair Whittingham moved to recommend approval of a credit hour and level of course change for CSCI 2290 – Social Implications of Technology to CSCI 3190; change CSCI 3380 – Computer Architecture from an elective to a requirement; and change CSCI 4191 – Seminar from an elective to a requirement. Lynn Burley seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 12 yes, 0 no, 1 abstention.

4. Report of Subcommittee III – Lorien Foote, Chair

Chair Foote moved to recommend approval of MUSA 4210 – Composition Applied Instruction with minor editorial changes. Patty Phelps seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Chair Foote moved to recommend approval of ENGL 4362 – Southern Literature and Folklore with minor editorial changes. Bill Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Chair Foote moved to recommend approval to waive the minor requirement for BS mathematics students who complete the requirement for teacher licensure. Patty Phelps seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.

Chair Foote moved to recommend approval of PHIL 3370 – Metaphysics with minor editorial changes. George Bratton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Chair Foote moved to recommend approval of a course level change for SOC 3360 – Self and Society to SOC 2360. George Bratton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

The information items included:

1. Biology Department

a. Delete BIOL 3250/3350/3450/4455 – Special Problems in Biology

b. BIOL 3150/4150 – bulletin revision

2. Delete ENGL 3343 – Southern Literature (course is being replaced by ENGL 4362 – Southern Literature and Folklore)

3. Family & Consumer Sciences Department

a. FACS 1370 – Clothing Construction title change to Interior and Apparel Construction I

b. FACS 3340 – History of Furniture I title change to History of Interiors, Architecture and Furniture I

c. FACS 3341 – History of Furniture II title change to History of Interiors, Architecture and Furniture II

d. FACS 3361 – Tailoring title change to Interior and Apparel Construction 2

4. Political Science Department

a. Delete PSCI 2101 – Model United Nations

b. PSCI 4310 – International Political Economy title change to International Political Economy and Globalization

c. PSCI 4310 – International Political Economy and Globalization bulletin revision

d. PSCI 4345 – Political Systems of Sub-Saharan African title change to Governments and Politics of Sub-Saharan Africa
