Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
October 19, 2004
Members Present:
George Bratton, MichelleBridges, Lynn Burley, Lorien Foote, Richard Gaughan, Joe Horton, Jennifer Johnson, Kevin Kendrick, Bill Kordsmeier, Conrad Stanitski, Elizabeth Smith, Ann Witcher, Jeff Whittingham, and Valerie Williams.
Members Absent:
Joe Anderson, Mary Harlan, Charles Harvey, Mike Scoles, Tony Sitz and Steve Zeltmann.
The items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Minutes of the September 21, 2004 meeting were approved as circulated.
3. Chair Roden welcomed the following new members to the Undergraduate Council:
George Bratton, Department of Mathematics
Michelle Bridges, Student Representative of Student Senate
4. Report of Subcommittee II – Joe Horton, Chair.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of a new course ENGL 4381 - subject to receiving clarification that the syllabus intends to cover several authors and not just Baldwin. Discussion followed. Questions were raised concerning how many times the course may be repeated, the course goals, will the course also cover African authors and how often, and concerns over the course title. Dr. Ruud was invited in by the council to answer questions. Discussion continued. Dr. Johnson moved to table the proposal. Dr. Gaughan seconded the motion. Motion passed 12 yes, 1 no, o abstentions.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of a new course ENGL 4382 – Race in American Literature subject to clarification of more specific course goals. Ms. Smith seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. Ruud was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Dr. Bratton moved to table the proposal. Ms. Smith seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of two new courses; MSL 4303 – Advanced Officership I and MSL 4304 – Advanced Officership II. Ms. Smith seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 12 yes, 1 no, 0 abstentions.
5. Dr. Witcher reported that each council member responded to the paper vs electronic transmission of Undergraduate Council information to council members. Dr. Burley moved to accept to continue to conduct our business with paper. Motion passed 11 yes, 1 yes absentee vote, 2 no, and 0 abstentions.
6. Chair Roden informed the council that any member who cannot attend a council meeting is welcome to submit a proxy vote, or any suggestions they may have. Even if a council member can only attend part of a meeting, their voice is always welcome.

SOC 3398 from Travel Seminar in a Spanish Speaking Country to Travel Seminar
