Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
Members Present:
Nelle Bedner, Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, John Choinski, Richard Gaughan, Mary Harlan, Charles Harvey, David Harvey, Joe Horton, Dawn Jakubowski, Jennifer Johnson, Rahul Mehta, and Valerie Williams.
Members Absent:
Elizabeth Smith, Tony Sitz, and Ann Witcher.
The items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting
was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Dr. Joe Horton nominated Dr. Tammy Benson to serve as secretary for the
2003/2004 academic year. Dr. Dave Harvey seconded the nomination. Vote was
unanimous.
3. Minutes of the April 15, 2003 and April 29, 2003 meetings were
approved as circulated.
4. Review of charge of the Undergraduate Council as stated in the Faculty
Handbook.
5. Announcement of new Council Members: Richard Gaughan and Ann Witcher.
6. Report of Subcommittee II
Dr. Rahul Mehta, Chair of Subcommittee II,
moved to recommend approval to change MSIT 4315 – Integrated Science and
Math Methods to SCI 4315
– Integrated Science and Math Methods; delete any sociology course from the
Middle/Secondary Education and Instructional
Technologies program; and a new course MSIT 3320 – Introduction to Teaching
at the Middle Level. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed.
Under information item: add ENGL 2380 – Introduction to Poetry as an option
to ENGL 3370 – Introduction to Fiction, ENGL 2380 should be changed to ENGL
2370. Motion passed unanimously.
7. Report of Subcommittee III
Dr. Nelle Bedner, Chair of Subcommittee III, moved
to recommend approval of a new Bachelor of Science in Addiction Studies
degree program with two tracks (Prevention Track and Treatment Track.) Dr.
David Harvey seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed
unanimously.
Dr. Bedner moved to recommend approval of a new certificate in Addiction
Studies. Dr. Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed
unanimously.
Dr. Bedner moved to recommend the following new courses; HSC 2310 –
Addiction Counseling: Theory and Practice, HSC 2320 – Addiction:
Assessment, Intervention and Treatment Planning, HSC 2330 – Etiology and
Epidemiology of Addiction, and HSC 3310 – Group Counseling Skills. Dr.
Harlan seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed
unanimously.
Dr. Bedner moved to recommend the following new courses with the request
the perquisites be added; HSC 3320 – Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling,
HSC 3330 – Family Systems and Addiction, and HSC 4610 – Practicum in
Substance Abuse. Dr. Jakubowski seconded the motion. Discussion followed.
Committee asked the records reflect that the Prevention Track show program
requirements to be 24 and not 25. Motion passed unanimously.

placement, or consent of chair
Other business
Chair Roden stated that all proposals coming before the council should
be submitted in electronic format.
