Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
January 24, 2006
Members Present:
Joe Anderson, Brooks Green, Richard Gaughan, Mary Harlan, Bill Kordsmeier, Erick McCarthy, Patty Phelps, Han-Chieh Wei, Elizabeth Smith, Ann Witcher, Steve Zeltmann, and Valerie Williams.
Members Absent:
Steve Addison, George Bratton, Lynn Burley, Lorien Foote, Tony Sitz, and Jeff Whittingham.
The items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Minutes of the November 15, 2005 meeting were approved as circulated.
3. Report of Subcommittee I Bill Kordsmeier, Chair.
Chair Kordsmeier moved to recommend approval of a course number change from GEOG 3311 Geographic Information Systems to GEOG 3303 Geographic Information Systems. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Kordsmeier moved to recommend approval to change BIOL 2411 Microbiology in Human Affairs from a required course to an elective for the B.S. degree in Health Sciences Pre-Physical Therapy emphasis. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Kordsmeier moved to recommend approval of the Departmental Response to External Review of the French Language Program. Dr. Brooks seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
4. Report of Subcommittee II Brooks Green, Interim Chair
Chair Green moved to recommend approval of a new course PHIL 3343 Philosophy of Sex and Love. Dr. Kordsmeier seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Green moved to recommend approval to change PSYC 2350 Sensation and Perception from a sophomore level to a junior level PSYC 3330 Sensation and Perception. Discussion followed. Dr. Billy Smith was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Green moved to recommend approval to delete the Ethnic Studies Concentration within the Sociology B.A. degree. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Green moved to recommend approval of curricular changes for the B.A./B.S. in Speech Communication Public Relations emphasis. Ms. Smith seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Curricular changes to include:
1. Reduce the number of hours in the major from 45 to 39 by deleting:
SPCH 2341 Small Group Communications
SPCH 31D3 Communication Applications
MCOM 1123 Print Media Applications
MCOM 2123 Electronic Media Applications
2. Prefix change from SPCH to PRLS for:
SPCH 2305 Introduction to Public Relations to PRLS 2305
SPCH 3305 Public Relations Techniques to PRLS 3305
SPCH 3310 Writing for Public Relations to PRLS 3310
SPCH 4305 Public Relations Cases and Campaigns to PRLS 4305
SPCH 4308 Public Relations Management to PRLS 4308
3. Remove SPCH 1310 Public Speaking as a required course and add MCOM 3301 Media Law and Ethics as a required course. Remove SPCH 2310 Advanced Public Speaking, SPCH 2311 Business and Professional Speaking, and WRTG 4320 Rhetoric and Cross Cultural Communication as electives. SPCH 4311 Evolution and Cross Cultural Communication is removed as an alternative to SPCH 3312 Persuasion.
4. Establish an entrance requirement of a 2.25 cumulative GPA to officially declare Public Relations as a students major.
5. Establish a major GPA 2.5 to graduate with a Public Relations emphasis.
Discussion continued. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Report of Subcommittee III Patty Phelps, Interim Chair
Chair Phelps moved to recommend approval of a new course PSCI 3305 United Nations and International Politics with minor editorial changes. Dr. Harlan seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Phelps moved to recommend approval of a new course PSCI 3315 International Law and Organizations with minor editorial changes. Dr. Green seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Phelps moved to recommend approval of a new course PSCI 4305 The Political Economy of Development with minor editorial changes. Dr. Gaughan seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Phelps moved to recommend approval of a new course PSCI 4320 Revolution and Political Violence with minor editorial changes. Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Chair Phelps moved to recommend approval of a new course PSCI 4325 Mexican Politics and US-Mexican Relations with minor editorial changes. Dr. Gaughan seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
The information items included:
1. GEOG 3309 GIS in Practice: Environmental Applications (bulletin revision)
2. New abbreviated course title for SOC 4320 Sociology of Work
3. Add ECON 2320 Principles of Macroeconomics and ECON 2321 Principles of Microeconomics as ancillary courses in the Applied Mathematics B.S. degree program.
Chair Roden asked each council member to go back and ask their colleges to review their existing programs and delete courses, programs, etc. they no longer need. The 2006-2008 Undergraduate Bulletin will be published this year and a new Banner System will be installed to replace the current Student Information System (SIS) in 2007 and this gives us the opportunity to make sure our programs are the way we want them.
